Latam Strike Cancels 173 Flights and Affects 20,000 Passengers in Chile, Causing Disruptions and Uncertainties in Air Travel.
Latam Strike Causes Chaos in Chilean Air Travel
Air travel in Chile is facing one of the biggest crises of the year. Since November 12, a strike by Latam Airlines employees has led to a cancellation of 173 flights, affecting around 20,000 passengers across the country.
The strike, which is expected to last until the 17th, is causing disruptions at airports, long lines, and uncertainties regarding rebooking and refunds.
Latam stated it is implementing emergency measures to mitigate the impacts of the strike and ensure that most passengers can travel within 24 hours of their original flight time. Still, the situation remains tense, with delays and widespread dissatisfaction among travelers.

Tickets Can Be Rebooked or Refunded
The airline announced that the contingency measures will remain in effect until the end of the strike, and that affected passengers can rebook their flights at no additional cost or request a full refund for tickets and associated services.
According to Latam’s Vice President of Customers, Paulo Miranda, the company’s focus is to preserve the country’s connectivity and prioritize the most isolated regions.
“We are making an effort to provide the best available solution for all passengers affected by this situation, maintaining the connectivity of the country, particularly for those territories that need it most,” Miranda stated.
The statement came amid growing pressure from consumers and the Chilean government, which is closely monitoring the impacts of the strike on the national air transport.
Latam Tries to Minimize Disruptions with Emergency Plan
While employees remain mobilized, Latam has intensified its logistical efforts to reduce chaos at terminals. The company has been reorganizing teams, redistributing crews, and adjusting internal routes to try to keep part of the operation active.
Even so, many passengers report difficulties in rescheduling flights and a lack of clear information about new schedules. Uncertainty is rising, especially for those who rely on air transport for urgent commitments or international connections.
Furthermore, the workers’ association has not provided a timeline for ending the strike, increasing tension in the sector.
Impacts on Chilean Tourism and Economy
The strike does not only affect occasional passengers. The Chilean tourism sector is also feeling the effects of the stoppage, especially in the cities of Santiago, Punta Arenas, and Antofagasta — popular destinations for tourists and executives.
Hotels and agencies are already reporting mass cancellations, compromising the recovery of tourism. The lack of flights also affects the shipment of supplies and increases disruptions in air transport.
Chilean Government Monitors Crisis and Demands Quick Solution
In light of the increasing impacts, Chilean authorities have pressured Latam and the unions for an immediate resolution to the impasse. The government claims to be evaluating measures to prevent logistical collapse and ensure the rights of passengers affected by the strike.
On the other hand, union representatives argue that the strike is the result of longstanding demands for better working conditions and salary adjustments, which they say have been ignored by the company.
Situation Remains Uncertain, Passengers Should Stay Alert
With the continuation of the strike, air travel in Chile remains unstable. Latam emphasized that it will continue updating information on its official channels and advises passengers to check flight status before heading to the airports.
Meanwhile, the disruptions caused by the strike continue to accumulate, revealing the fragility of the air system in the face of prolonged stoppages. The outcome is still uncertain, but the episode reinforces the importance of dialogue and planning in a sector essential for the Chilean economy and mobility.
