The AS532AL Cougar H-284 Aircraft, Main Rotary-Wing Platform of the Chilean Army, Is in Itajubá, Minas Gerais, Where It Is Undergoing Major Overhaul at Specialized Industrial Facilities, Including Complete Disassembly, System Renewal, and Projection for Operational Life Extension of Up to 12 Additional Years
The AS532AL Cougar H-284 helicopter from the Chilean Army is in Itajubá, Minas Gerais, at Helibras facilities, undergoing a major overhaul aimed at restoring its operational conditions and extending its service life, with delivery scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
Major Overhaul Takes Place at Airbus Helicopters Facility in Brazil
The aircraft recently arrived at the Brazilian unit of Airbus Helicopters for a major maintenance program, according to photographic records and information released by aviation specialists and spotters.
The process involves an exhaustive inspection, with extensive disassembly of the structure, allowing for a detailed evaluation of critical components before the start of recovery and technical update phases for the helicopter.

The rural caucus is advancing in Congress to try to block the use of Ibama satellites in remote embargoes, targeting a system that identifies illegal deforestation in real time and jeopardizing one of the most efficient tools used by the government to block devastated areas in the Amazon, prevent access to rural credit, halt deals with meatpackers, and curb the advance of environmental destruction across thousands of hectares.
Intervention Includes Structural Renewal, Systems, and Avionics
The overhaul includes the renewal of structures, systems, interiors, and avionics, aiming to return the aircraft to conditions close to factory specifications, as previously applied to other units of the same model.
In similar programs already carried out, this type of intervention allowed for an extension of operational service life of up to 12 additional years, ensuring greater fleet availability over time.
Delivery of the H-284 Is Scheduled for the First Quarter of 2026
After the completion of all technical procedures and corresponding tests, the delivery of the H-284 helicopter is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026, marking the end of this phase of the program.
The timeline follows the pattern adopted in previous overhauls conducted at the Itajubá facility, reinforcing the predictability of the industrial process applied.
Cougar Remains the Main Helicopter of the Chilean Army
The AS532AL Cougar fleet continues to be the primary rotary-wing asset of the Chilean Army Aviation Brigade, particularly notable in the Germania Helicopter Battalion, operating in tactical transport, logistical support, and combined operations.
Since late 2022, the Chilean Army initially sent three units to Brazil for this same program. The first of these, H-280, returned to operational service in 2024 after successfully completing the overhaul process.
