According to authorities from the Maryland Lottery, the man bought two $1 tickets before a holiday while shopping at Royal Food Mart in Fort Washington. In both, he used the same number sequence: 25121.

The bettor reported that he decided to use the sequence after noticing that the same numbers appeared frequently on license plates. The repetition caught his attention and motivated his choice of the combination used in the bet.

Despite the drawing result occurring in December, the winner had to wait until March 6 to go to the lottery headquarters to claim the prize. He explained that the delay was due to an injury.
During the period between the drawing and the cashing of the money, the man said he shared the information only with one person. According to him, he preferred to keep the situation confidential while waiting for his recovery.
