Generation Z is among the groups most affected by artificial intelligence in the USA, according to employment and automation data.

The expansion of artificial intelligence continues to transform the job market in the United States and has more intensely affected professionals who are starting their careers. Recent data indicates that Generation Z workers are among the groups most exposed to changes brought about by automation, especially in administrative, creative, and technological areas.

Although the number of jobs eliminated by AI has decreased in recent months, experts warn that the scenario still calls for caution. A report released by Goldman Sachs indicates that the reduction in job losses is not linked to a slowdown in technology, but rather to the growth of infrastructure projects aimed at supporting artificial intelligence systems.

Why is Generation Z at the center of this transformation?

The surveys analyzed by the bank identified an increasingly strong relationship between the adoption of AI tools and the increased difficulties faced by professionals under 30 years old.

While experienced workers can use technology to enhance productivity and performance, many entry-level positions are being replaced or reduced. This affects precisely the younger portion of the workforce, who typically occupy initial roles within companies.

According to data compiled by the financial institution, generative artificial intelligence tools can increase productivity by about 23%. This gain, however, has mainly benefited professionals who already have accumulated experience and can integrate the new resources into their activities.

Generation Z loses ground in sectors directly impacted by AI

The largest cuts associated with automation have occurred in segments where tasks can be performed by intelligent systems.

In April alone, approximately 21,900 layoffs were directly attributed to the use of artificial intelligence. According to monitoring by Goldman Sachs, this was the highest monthly volume recorded since the start of monitoring in 2023.

Among the most affected areas are:

  • Marketing;
  • Graphic design;
  • Customer service;
  • Document processing;
  • Software development.

Over the past three years, layoffs related to technological advancement have reached about 136,000 workers.

Construction of data centers creates jobs, but experts issue warning

While it eliminates positions in certain sectors, artificial intelligence also drives hiring in other segments.

The need to expand digital infrastructure has led to the construction of data processing centers, known as data centers. These facilities are responsible for storing and processing the vast amounts of information used by AI systems.

Since 2022, this movement has generated about 212,000 jobs. Currently, the sector creates approximately 9,000 new positions per month.

The opportunities are mainly concentrated in areas such as:

  • Civil construction;
  • Electrical installation;
  • Air conditioning;
  • Expansion of power networks;
  • Specialized technical services.

Despite this, experts assess that a large part of these hires is temporary in nature.

The challenge between temporary jobs and permanent positions

Analysts’ concern is related to the difference between the jobs created during the construction of data centers and those needed to keep them running after the completion of the works.

Estimates from the American Edge Project indicate that the current investment cycle could result in 4.7 million temporary positions related to the construction of these structures.

On the other hand, the forecast for permanent positions is significantly lower. The study points to the potential for about 697,000 jobs focused on the operation and maintenance of the facilities.

This means that a significant portion of the opportunities opened today may disappear when the projects are completed.

The job market continues to create positions despite the changes

Even in the face of transformations brought about by artificial intelligence, the U.S. economy continues to record job creation.

UBS economists estimate that approximately 95,000 jobs were created outside the agricultural sector in May. The unemployment rate, according to projections, remained close to 4.33%.

These numbers show that the market still maintains the capacity to absorb workers. However, the distribution of these positions is changing as new technologies gain ground in different economic activities.

The future of Generation Z will depend on the speed of adaptation

The advance of artificial intelligence is not expected to be limited to currently impacted sectors. Financial institutions assess that automation tends to reach new areas in the coming years, including industrial segments related to chemical production and the manufacture of electrical equipment.

In this context, a central question remains for economists and labor market specialists: will new jobs emerge at a pace sufficient to compensate for those being replaced by technology?

The answer is not yet definitive. What the data already indicates is that Generation Z is among the groups that will first feel the effects of this transition, in a scenario where professional adaptability may become increasingly important.
