In 1981, isolated in the Amazon after separating from Kevin Gale in a kayak, Yossi Ghinsberg faces three weeks without supplies, rain, and floods, until reuniting with the river in Bolivia. The plan was to reach La Paz with Karl Ruprechter and Marcus Stamm, but the mission fell apart and marked his life.

With around 5.5 million square kilometers, the Amazon is one of the most vast territories in South America, with unique fauna and flora and a constant presence of explorers. It was in this setting that, at 21, Israeli Yossi Ghinsberg ended up isolated in the Amazon after an improvised journey in Bolivia.

Son of Holocaust survivors, Yossi Ghinsberg served in the Israeli Navy for three years and, in mid-1981, saved money to travel to South America and try to become an explorer. After several jobs, he accepted an expedition in search of gold and set La Paz as a meeting point for resupply, not foreseeing the outcome.

The South American Route and the Meeting with Karl Ruprechter

Interested in the uninhabited heart of the Amazon, Yossi Ghinsberg traveled with the help of locals and moved between Venezuela, Colombia, and Bolivia.

In Bolivia, he met Karl Ruprechter, an Austrian who claimed to be a geologist and was seeking partners for a mission that was supposed to end in the indigenous village of Tacana.

With the promise of gold, Karl Ruprechter gathered four men: himself, Yossi Ghinsberg, and two other young men, Marcus Stamm and Kevin Gale.

The expedition was described as poorly planned, with little preparation for the logistics of jungle, rivers, and resupply in La Paz.

The Bifurcation in the Jungle and the Choice of the River

During the trek through the Amazon, the group found two possible routes.

One was more comfortable by land; the other depended on the rivers, with riskier navigation. Karl Ruprechter and Marcus Stamm decided to follow the shore and walk through the jungle, stating that they were not good swimmers.

Kevin Gale and Yossi Ghinsberg entered a kayak and followed the fast waters.

Before parting ways, the group reaffirmed La Paz as the destination for reunion and resupply, a plan that fell apart in practice when the forest imposed rain and torrents.

The Separation at the Waterfall and the Moment He Became Isolated in the Amazon

At a certain point in the journey, the strong current of a waterfall separated Yossi Ghinsberg and Kevin Gale.

Kevin Gale reached the shore safely. Yossi Ghinsberg, alone, lost the route reference and spent four days searching for signs of the group, unable to resume the La Paz plan.

From that point, he became isolated in the Amazon in an unknown area, already within Bolivia.

The isolation was not a choice, but a direct consequence of the combination of route decision, current, and lack of detailed planning.

Three Weeks Without Supplies, Floods, and Risks in the Jungle

Isolated in the Amazon, Yossi Ghinsberg decided to prioritize immediate survival actions while waiting for rescue.

For three weeks, without supplies or adequate equipment for the expedition, he faced torrential rain, floods, and unstable terrain.

Among the reported risks were attacks from giant red ants, threats from wild animals, and two situations of quicksand.

The physical condition worsened with a fungal infection in his foot, along with exhaustion and recurring hallucinations during the time he remained isolated in the Amazon.

The Reunion at the River in Bolivia and the Search Led by Kevin Gale

After more than 20 days without prospects, Yossi Ghinsberg heard the engine of a boat and headed toward the river. At the location, he reunited with Kevin Gale, who was accompanied by a native.

According to reports, Kevin Gale and the native had been searching for him for three days in Bolivia, trying to locate the point where the kayak had gone missing.

The reunion interrupted the most critical phase of the time isolated in the Amazon.

Nevertheless, La Paz was not the immediate destination. The priority became getting Yossi Ghinsberg out of the jungle and securing medical attention.

Hospital, Disappearance of Karl Ruprechter and Marcus Stamm, and the Symbol of La Paz

Rescued, Yossi Ghinsberg spent three months recovering in a hospital. Karl Ruprechter and Marcus Stamm, on the other hand, were never found, despite several rescue attempts associated with the expedition in Bolivia.

The meeting point in La Paz, defined before the separation, became a symbol of the planning that did not materialize.

The absence of reunion in La Paz reinforced how the poorly planned expedition dissolved the group into incompatible routes, between jungle and rivers.

Return After Ten Years and Projects with Amazon Communities

Ten years after the experience, Yossi Ghinsberg returned to the Amazon and initiated projects in tribes and communities in the region.

Alongside locals, he built accommodations, inns, and businesses, impacting the local economy, according to descriptions associated with the period following the isolation.

The return reinforced the bond between Yossi Ghinsberg and the forest that left him isolated in the Amazon in 1981.

Even after surviving in Bolivia, he returned to work with Amazonian communities, in an agenda of life reconstruction.

Lectures Since 2001 and Current Life

In mid-2001, Yossi Ghinsberg became a motivational speaker and began sharing his journey with exploration enthusiasts.

Today, he is married to his third wife, has four children, and documents the countries where he lived with his family, with homes in Australia, the United States, and Israel.

The story began with the goal of reaching La Paz and ended with Yossi Ghinsberg isolated in the Amazon and found in the river in Bolivia by Kevin Gale.

The combination of a poorly planned expedition, separation, and extreme survival time remains the central axis of the case.

If you were isolated in the Amazon without supplies, what decision would you make first: follow the river like Kevin Gale or try to return to La Paz through the jungle?
