A Land Rover Discovery got stuck in the sand and ended up being covered by the rising tide, attracting the attention of onlookers and bathers. The vehicle was removed hours later with the help of a tractor, but submersion in salt water caused severe damage and the case ended as a total loss.
A Land Rover Discovery valued at up to £80,000 became an unexpected attraction on the main beach of Abersoch, in Gwynedd, North Wales, after getting stuck in the sand and being reached by the tide on Sunday, May 3, 2026. The incident was recorded by locals and visitors, who filmed the SUV being covered by water as the tide advanced.
According to the Daily Post/North Wales Live, the vehicle got stuck on the beach and initial rescue attempts were interrupted when the water began to rise rapidly. The report described the car as a luxury Land Rover Discovery, a model that can cost around £80,000 in the UK, but did not confirm the exact value of that specific unit.
The episode drew attention because it occurred in a well-known tourist area of Abersoch. According to the Cambrian News, visitors spotted the car partially submerged on the morning of May 3.

A walker reportedly saw the vehicle around 7:30 am, just over two hours before high tide, and images showed people paddling near and even over the area where the car was covered by water.
The scene was also reported by WalesOnline, which stated that efforts to remove the Land Rover were abandoned as the tide advanced. The publication highlighted that the vehicle remained in the sea under apparently calm conditions, but in an increasingly difficult situation as the water rose.

The outcome: vehicle was removed after the tide went down
The Land Rover was not left abandoned in the sea. According to an update published by the Daily Post/North Wales Live, the vehicle was removed from the beach on the evening of Sunday, May 3, after the tide went down.
The removal was done with the help of a beach tractor, which lifted the Discovery from the water’s edge and took it across the sand to a trailer.
The operation gathered a crowd of onlookers at Abersoch beach. According to the local press, residents did not know who the vehicle’s owner was. The Cambrian News reported that the car was still attached to a tow rope, indicating that someone may have tried to remove it before the tide completely covered the SUV.
After submersion in saltwater, publications that covered the case stated that the Discovery was considered a total loss. Although there is no detailed technical report in the sources consulted, this outcome is consistent with the type of damage caused by seawater, which can compromise the engine, electrical parts, electronic components, interior finish, and vehicle structure.
The case ended as a warning to drivers on beaches subject to rapid tide changes: even large and traction-equipped vehicles, like a Land Rover Discovery, can get stuck in the sand and be engulfed by water in a few hours.
