Drivers from Various Regions Began to Notice a Red Line Painted in the Center of Some Roads. The Initiative, According to Traffic Authorities, Is Part of a Strategy to Reinforce Driver Attention and Reduce Head-On Collisions in Critical Sections.

A red line painted on the asphalt. It seems simple, but it has drawn attention in Spain. More specifically, on the A-355 road in Andalusia, one of the most dangerous stretches in the country. The measure is unprecedented in the region and has a clear objective: to reduce accidents.

A Road With a Tragic History

The A-355 became known as “the road of fear.” The nickname is not exaggerated. In 2023, ten people died there.

The traffic is intense and above expected: the road, inaugurated in 2014, was designed for 7,000 vehicles per day, but today it receives almost 20,000, with many heavy cargo trucks.

In light of this concerning scenario, the Government of Andalusia decided to act. And did not wait for federal measures. The

regional government delegate in Málaga, Patrícia Navarro, explained that the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) took too long to install radars in the area. Therefore, the regional executive sought alternatives on its own.

Visual Measure; The Red Line

The solution was to paint a continuous red line on the road. It serves as a no-overtaking signal, exactly like the traditional continuous white or yellow lines. The difference lies in the color.

The red is more eye-catching. The idea is simple: if drivers notice the risk better, they may think twice before attempting to overtake in dangerous areas.

This red line is the first of its kind throughout Andalusia. And it is being treated as an experiment. The hope is that it will help avoid risky behaviors. The focus is on prevention.

In addition to the line, the government announced the installation of four educational radars. These devices do not impose fines but inform vehicle speed in real-time and remind what the speed limit is. Flashing panels will reinforce the message for those exceeding the speed limit.

More Traffic, More Attention

The increase in traffic on the A-355 is also concerning. The number of vehicles has nearly tripled since the road opened. As a result, dangerous overtaking has become more common, especially in curves and narrow stretches.

The red line is just the beginning. Other measures are planned, and the local government states that it will continue to act within its competencies.

The important thing, according to authorities, is not to remain idle in the face of the accident statistics.

The experience in Andalusia could serve as a model for other regions of Spain. If successful, the red line could become a new reference for road safety in the country.
