According to information published by the newspaper Estadão, the London-based fund Appian is about to close the sale of Atlantic Nickel, owner of the Santa Rita Mine, located in Itagibá, in the state of Bahia. One of the possible candidates to acquire one of the world’s largest open-pit nickel sulfide mines is the Canadian Teck Resources. The Sale Of Atlantic Nickel
The sale, estimated at around US$ 1 billion (R$ 5.3 billion at the current exchange rate), comes shortly after Appian reactivated the mine, which made its first sale of nickel concentrate in January last year. The mine was acquired by the fund in 2017 and has a production capacity of 6.5 million tons per year. Additionally, it operates in an open-pit manner.
Among its ventures in Brazil, Appian, in addition to Atlantic Nickel, also operates in Mineração Vale Verde, with a project in the early stages for the exploration of copper and gold. When approached by the newspaper Estadão, Teck Resources stated that it does not comment on market rumors or speculation. Appian did not respond.

Recently, The Miner Exported The Largest Nickel Shipment In 2021
Heading to Europe, the Atlantic Nickel miner shipped last Wednesday (09/23) a vessel carrying 11,121.44 tons of nickel concentrate, used for manufacturing electric vehicles. So far, this shipment is the largest ever marketed by the company during the year 2021. The cargo departed from the Port of Ilhéus, in the municipality of Itagibá, in Bahia, where it has been operating in the mining sector for many years. The company is known for producing and exporting nickel sulfide. This is already the eighth shipment exported from January to September, accumulating over 80,000 tons.
Even though it is still September, the exported loads during this period have already surpassed the results obtained during the year 2020, which registered 67,700 tons. With these results and the effort on the part of the entire team that makes up Atlantic Nickel, the company is solidifying itself more and more as a driver of energy transition.
These nickel exports from the Atlantic Nickel miner greatly contribute to the manufacturing and subsequent use of batteries in electric vehicles. Analyzing from an economic standpoint, the activities developed by the company significantly contribute to the socioeconomic advancement of the community residing around Itagibá-Ipiaú. As for the state of Bahia, it is also set to gain visibility in the mining sector, causing other companies to seek investment in the area.
From 2018 to 2020, nickel exports to Europe and the manufacturing of batteries for electric vehicles were responsible for generating around R$ 151 million in the state’s economy, whereby commerce and suppliers benefited from closing partnerships and contracts with Atlantic Nickel. Concurrently with the investments, many job openings were created for the local community.
