Vice President of the Republic Talks in Interview About the Sale of Refineries, Local Content in Shipbuilding, and That Foreign Investment in the Nuclear and Oil Sectors Is Welcome
In an interview given last Monday (04/29), the Vice President of the Republic, Hamilton Mourão, made statements about several important issues for the country.
Mourão spoke about breaking the monopoly aimed at increasing refining capacity, about the existence of local content in shipbuilding that is economically viable, and that partners like China and other countries, if they want to invest in our country, will be welcome.
Shipbuilding
In line with the government’s economic team, the Vice President stated that he is against market reservations, meaning he considers it impossible to do as in Dilma Rousseff’s government, where we had unfeasible prices.
Mourão adds that a platform contracted here in Brazil cost four to five times more than that which you contracted outside the country, meaning that the appropriate local content is what is economically viable.

Lula government releases R$ 1.16 billion through the New PAC to renew public transportation in Brazil with 727 buses in cities of São Paulo, Pernambuco, Minas, Rio, and other states, including electric and less polluting models.
Highlighting that Brazilian shipbuilding should operate in our market niches, such as cabotage for example, he concluded the subject by stating that the opening of the economy will ensure competitiveness in the market.
Oil
Mourão stated that he sees no problems with Chinese companies entering our offshore market and competing in the auctions for the excess of onerous assignment and the sixth auction of the pre-salt.
He further stated that China has always been a partner of Brazil and that he sees no mystery in this, since we have other business dealings with the Chinese in the Oil and Gas sector.
Nuclear Energy
This is another point where the Vice President sees no issues with foreign investment entry, with caveats for safety, as it involves a fuel that could, in the case of leakage, cause harm to people. Regarding the project, there is no high degree of secrecy, as other countries already dominate this technology.
Mourão also stated that he hopes to complete the Angra 3 project and that our country cannot disregard nuclear power as a source of clean energy.
Regarding the interest of the Russian company Rosatom, he declared that there is no political-ideological issue and that he just hopes that the chosen partner is reliable and follows our rules.
In conclusion, Mourão stated that with resources, we can indeed think about having nuclear plants in other parts of the country, given that we still have places in Brazil that are supplied by oil-fired thermoelectric plants.
