New CNH Model Removes Historical Barriers, Reduces Mandatory Steps, and Brings the Exam Closer to the Reality of Drivers, with Lower Costs, More Autonomy, and Focus on Safe Driving
The process to obtain the National Driver’s License (CNH) is undergoing one of the biggest transformations in recent decades in Brazil. The change in the driving exam breaks with the traditional model, reduces costs, simplifies steps, and gives candidates more control over their training. In addition, the new format already adopted by several state Detrans prioritizes real driving, traffic safety, and the modernization of evaluation methods.
This information was released by Estado de Minas, based on journalistic investigation and data collected from recent decisions by the Detrans, along with analyses published by traffic specialists and vehicle education channels. In this context, the CNH ceases to be an expensive and rigid process and becomes more accessible and functional.
How the New CNH Process Became Cheaper and Less Bureaucratic
The main change is in the flexibility of the old model. The theoretical course, which previously required mandatory in-person classes, is now offered digitally and for free in several states. Thus, the candidate can study autonomously and take the test directly at the Detran.

Additionally, the system now allows credentialed independent instructors, which completely changes the logic of closed packages from driving schools. For this reason, the student only pays for the practical classes they actually need, drastically reducing the total costs of the process.
Meanwhile, estimates indicate that the savings can reach up to 80%, especially for those who already have some experience behind the wheel. Consequently, the CNH ceases to be a restricted privilege and becomes a real possibility for thousands of Brazilians.
At the same time, medical and psychological exams have also been standardized. The national ceiling is set at R$ 180, preventing abuses that, in some states, exceeded R$ 500. Thus, the process becomes fairer and financially more predictable.
Practical Test Shifts Focus and Brings the Exam Closer to Real Driving
Another central change occurs in the practical driving test. The exam has shifted its focus from prioritizing artificial maneuvers to evaluating defensive driving, traffic reading, and decision-making in real situations.
On the other hand, the traditional parallel parking has been removed in various states, such as São Paulo, Alagoas, Amazonas, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Santa Catarina, and Paraná. Still, this rule is not national, and states like Ceará maintain the mandatory maneuver.
Moreover, candidates can now take the exam with a private vehicle, including one with automatic transmission, in states like São Paulo and Alagoas. This change aligns with the modernization of the Brazilian fleet and corrects an old distortion in the system.
Even so, even when taking the exam in an automatic car, the CNH remains fully valid, allowing the driving of manual vehicles. For this reason, the new model better reflects the everyday reality of Brazilian drivers.
Renewal of the CNH and Direct Impact on New Drivers
Meanwhile, the renewal of the CNH has also undergone important adjustments. Drivers who have not committed infractions in the last 12 months can renew their document automatically, without unnecessary in-person steps.
In addition, digital systems have reduced travel, queues, and appointments. Consequently, the process has become faster, more efficient, and less bureaucratic for those who are already in good standing.
Finally, for those looking to obtain the CNH from now on, the new model represents a structural change. Still, the rules vary according to the state, requiring attention to the local Detran regulations.
Overall, the changes point to a more modern, accessible CNH aligned with practical safety. For the candidate, the gain is reflected in their finances and experience. For the system, in the training of more conscious and prepared drivers.
Do you believe that this new CNH model truly prepares drivers better, or are there still adjustments needed to ensure more safety on the roads?
