Apple Receives Million-Dollar Fine from the Public Prosecutor’s Office Due to the Exclusion of Chargers in All Its iPhones. The Purchase of a Separate Charger Costs More Than R$219 at the Company’s Official Store.
The Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) published, on this Tuesday (6), the information that the Ministry of Justice fined Apple R$12 million and suspended the sale of iPhones without a charger.
The text of the DOU states that a fine of R$ 12,274,500 (twelve million two hundred seventy-four thousand five hundred reais) was imposed, the revocation of the registration of iPhones that were introduced to the market starting from the iPhone 12 model, and the immediate suspension of the sale of all iPhones, regardless of model or generation, without a battery charger.
However, if Apple decides not to suspend sales of smartphones without a charger, the Ministry of Justice chose not to immediately apply the daily fine. The sanction will be applied if the government verifies that Apple managed to circumvent the prohibition. For now, Apple has decided not to comment on the matter, according to g1.

News from 2020
After announcing the new iPhone 12 (iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max) in October 2020, Apple stopped including chargers in its smartphones. The justification offered by the company was that this decision is part of its “environmental goals,” but this explanation was rejected by the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon).
In January 2021, Samsung, influenced by Apple, opted to include only the USB cable, excluding the charger and earphones. The company used the same justification as Apple – regarding environmental causes – and offered consumers the option to redeem the charger through the “Samsung for You” page.
The Ministry of Justice and Public Security, in October 2021, informed Apple and Samsung that they were not following the guidelines to justify the absence of chargers in their phones. The National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon), in May 2022, which is linked to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, instructed over 900 units of Procon in Brazil to initiate administrative proceedings against Apple and Samsung due to the sale of mobile phones without chargers.
The purchase of a separate charger costs more than R$219 at the Apple official store. Wired earphones are also in the same price range. The launch prices varied. The iPhone 12 mini was launched at a price of US$ 729 (R$ 4,060), the iPhone 12 for US$ 829 (R$ 4,620), the iPhone 12 Pro for US$ 999 (R$ 5,570), and the iPhone 12 Pro Max for US$ 1,099 (R$ 6,120). Currently, the price can exceed R$7000.

The fine imposed by the Ministry of Justice occurred on the eve of the online event scheduled by Apple, which will take place this Wednesday (7) at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino, California (USA), with a live broadcast at 2 PM.
This event aims to reveal the iPhone 14 line and is held annually by Apple to launch its products. Apple will launch four new phones, in addition to bringing a new generation of earphones and Apple Watch watches.
