New Resolution of the Contran Promises to Fine Those Who Fail to Comply with the Rules for Helmets, Establishing Strict Requirements for the Safety of Motorcyclists. Inmetro Certification and the Use of Clear Visors at Night Are Now Mandatory.

In an attempt to increase safety on Brazilian roads, the National Traffic Council (Contran) launched a new regulation for helmet use, which has already raised concerns among drivers and motorcycle passengers.

However, few know that resolution 940/22, published in the Official Gazette of the Union, brings detailed requirements for protective equipment, non-compliance with which can result in significant fines. Is the population prepared for these new measures?

The resolution, although published some time ago, is still unknown to many motorcyclists.

It proposes an update and unification of existing standards for safety equipment, but without major changes compared to the previous regulations, which are now revoked.

The main objective of Contran is, according to the new rule, to align the requirements for greater safety of motorcycle riders and passengers, scooters, mopeds, tricycles, and quadricycles with open cabins, reinforcing the importance of correctly using helmets and other safety devices.

Rules for Helmets in 2024

The new standard establishes specific requirements for helmet use, with strict rules aimed at ensuring the safety and integrity of motorcyclists.

Among the main points are the mandatory certification by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality, and Technology (Inmetro), the presence of retro-reflective devices, and the use of appropriate visors.

Inmetro Certification

To be considered safe, all helmets must have Inmetro certification. This measure aims to ensure that the helmet meets quality and safety standards.

Additionally, helmets need to be equipped with appropriate straps and fastening hooks, ensuring that they remain properly adjusted during riding, minimizing the risk of accidents caused by improper use of the equipment.

Mandatory Use of Retro-Reflective Devices

Retro-reflective safety devices are mandatory and must be present on the sides and the back of the helmets.

This measure, according to Contran, aims to increase the visibility of motorcyclists on the roads, especially in low-light conditions.

The intention is to make motorcyclists more visible to other vehicles, reducing the possibility of collisions.

The Importance of Visors in Helmets

The resolution also addresses the mandatory use of visors, an essential item for eye protection.

During riding, visors must remain down, providing full coverage for the eyes of the motorcyclist and the passenger.

In the case of stops, the visor may be lifted but must be readjusted before the vehicle starts moving again.

For nighttime, the rule is even stricter: only clear visors are allowed, and the use of tinted films is prohibited.

This measure reinforces the need for clear and unobstructed vision at night, minimizing the risks of accidents caused by lack of visibility.

Alternative: Safety Glasses

Those who wear prescription or sunglasses do not need to compromise their safety.

The resolution allows the use of safety glasses as a safe alternative, as long as they are specific models for motorcyclists and not just regular sunglasses or corrective glasses.

Safety glasses have safety features that protect the motorcyclist from wind, dust, and debris, ensuring more complete and effective coverage.

Strict Fines for Those Who Disregard Helmet Rules

According to Contran, fines for those who disregard the new requirements are significant.

The agency’s intention is to ensure that the new rule is respected by all motorcycle riders, reinforcing the commitment to road safety.

The financial impact of fines on those who insist on ignoring the rules could weigh heavily on riders’ pockets, a strategy aimed at intensifying compliance with the proper use of safety equipment.

Goal: Greater Safety on the Roads

The creation of this new resolution is an attempt to reduce the alarming numbers of accidents involving motorcyclists.

According to recent statistics, the number of serious accidents involving motorcycles in Brazil remains high, and the lack of adequate protective equipment directly contributes to the severity of injuries.

With this new regulation, Contran seeks to promote a safer environment on Brazilian roads while raising awareness among motorcyclists about the importance of the correct use of helmets and protective equipment.

Bem, aqui no RJ não vai mudar nada, primeiro vc vai na loja comprar uma moto zero nem o capacete eles te dão, é a mesma coisa que vc comprar um carro sem o cinto de segurança. Um dos acessórios mais importantes e não é cobrado e que também não vem de fábrica é a antena corta linha. Agora vir implicar com viseira levantada? Imagino em dias de chuva, vou ter que ligar o limpa viseira ….

Quem fazem as leis são os senadores que vcs nem lembram de ter votado, para os ignorantes de plantão. E outra quando vc fez auto escola isso se aplica no CFC, deveria saber disso. E outra se tirou habilitação corretamente sem quebra saberiam disso.
