Hyundai and General Motors Formed Global Agreement to Co-Develop Five Vehicles, Including Compacts and Pickup Trucks for Latin America and an Electric Van for North America. The Partnership Envisions Shared Platforms, Technologies, and Hybrid Engines.

Hyundai and General Motors have reached an agreement to co-develop five vehicles, including four models for Central and South America and one electric van for North America.

The package includes a compact SUV, a compact car, a compact pickup, and a mid-sized pickup, all with options for combustion and hybrid engines.

According to the companies, combined sales could exceed 800,000 units annually when production is fully ramped up.

What Is Confirmed in the Agreement

The partnership focuses on shared platforms and technologies to accelerate development and reduce costs.

For Latin American markets, the four models will have architecture designed for combustion and mild electrification, while the electric van will be produced in North America. The current timeline anticipates launches starting in 2028.

Where HB20, Creta, Onix, and Tracker Fit In

The announcement has fueled speculation about the new generation of compacts and SUVs from both brands in Brazil.

The official plan mentions a family of compact vehicles co-developed for the region, which may pave the way for successors that share structural foundations between Hyundai (HB20 and Creta) and Chevrolet (Onix and Tracker).

However, there is no confirmation that the future Hyundai will be “direct” versions of the Chevrolets.

The announcement only mentions a platform and common technologies, preserving the design and tuning of each brand.

Roles in Development and Design

Industry reports indicate that GM will focus efforts on pickups, while Hyundai will lead the technical direction of the compacts and the electric van.

Even so, each manufacturer will have the freedom to implement their own design solutions, dynamic adjustments, and interfaces, respecting brand identity.

The Uncertainty That Remains: Oil-Bathed Timing Belt in the HB20?

The collaboration between the two automakers raised the possibility that the future HB20 could adopt Chevrolet’s 1.0 turbo engine, which uses a oil-bathed timing belt.

So far, there has been no official announcement regarding engine exchanges between the brands in Brazil.

The agreement talks about platforms and technologies without detailing the powertrain. Thus, it is not possible to state that Hyundai will adopt Chevrolet’s belt system in its compacts.

The History of Chevrolet’s Timing Belt

In recent years, Chevrolet has faced criticism regarding the durability of the oil-bathed timing belt in the Onix, Onix Plus, Tracker, and Montana models.

In response, the brand implemented after-sales actions and restored the warranty of up to 240,000 km for the belt, including for customers outside the complete maintenance history with the network, provided they meet the announced requirements.

Meanwhile, the discussion about causes for premature wear involved the use of off-specification lubricant, which accelerates the degradation of the part.

The manufacturer emphasizes the need to follow the maintenance plan and use approved oil, a condition tied to the extended warranty.

What to Expect from Future Hyundais

Given the design of the partnership and Hyundai’s engineering history, the trend is that the brand will evolve its own family of engines and evaluate hybrid systems from its global portfolio for regional compacts.

Nothing in the agreement disclosed so far indicates a mandatory adoption of Chevrolet engines in Brazilian Hyundais.

In other words, the presence of the oil-bathed timing belt in the upcoming HB20 and Creta is not confirmed.

Timeline, Volume, and Industrial Impact

The new products for Latin America are scheduled to debut starting in 2028, giving the two companies time to consolidate suppliers, validate components, and adapt factories in the region.

The target of 800,000 units/year when production reaches cruising speed indicates that the alliance aims for scale to compete in the highest volume segments in Brazil and neighboring countries.

What Has Not Yet Been Detailed

The announcement does not define the production locations for future compacts, the commercial names of the projects, engine combinations for each market, or hybridization strategy.

These points are likely to be disclosed as the programs advance. For now, the official message is limited to collaboration on architecture, the possibility of hybrid engines, and the electric van for North America.

Against this backdrop, the central question remains open: when the new family hits the streets, will Brazilian consumers see an HB20 with the same oil-bathed timing belt system as Chevrolet or will Hyundai continue with its own propulsion solutions?

O Hb20 da um show no Onix de motor, interna e externa, é mais útil o Onix usar o motor do Hb20 do que adotar a correia banhada a óleo… se acaso acontecer o Hb20 vai se tornar descartável
