In 1973, a small town in the Northeast was surprised by a discovery that would change its history: an artesian well that never stopped flowing mineral water. Nearly five decades later, the Violeto Well still impresses with the strength and purity of its waters, even with little national visibility.
The hinterland of Piauí hides a treasure beneath the ground. In Alvorada do Gurguéia, a municipality located in the southern part of the state, is the Violeto Well—considered the largest mineral water gushing well in Brazil and the second largest in the world in its category. Despite its grandeur, few people outside the region know its story and potential.
A Discovery That Impresses
The discovery of the Violeto Well occurred in 1973. The initial objective was to drill an artesian well for supplying the local population.
But what came out of the ground surprised everyone: a gigantic amount of mineral water gushing with force, day and night, without the need for pumping. Since then, the site has become one of the most curious spots in Piauí and a symbol of the region’s water potential.

Visitation and Current Structure
Despite the importance and tourist potential, the structure around the Violeto Well is still simple. There is a public pool, fed directly by the water from the well.
Entry costs R$ 3, but it can be free for guests of a small inn that operates on-site. The opening hours are from 7 AM to 8 PM, and the environment tends to be quiet and rustic.
Access is not the easiest. There is only a small sign on the road indicating the entrance, which requires attention from visitors.
Even so, the experience is worth it: the water is crystal clear, cold, and ideal for bathing on hot days. In addition, the surrounding environment features typical cerrado vegetation and a dry climate, which makes the visit even more interesting.
Promises of Revitalization
In 2023, the City Hall of Alvorada do Gurguéia announced a revitalization project for the area of the well, with a budget exceeding R$ 600 thousand.
The idea was to modernize the space, with solar lighting, informative signs, and a reception area. However, until mid-2024, the work was halted, and the site continued with basic infrastructure.
The city’s population, although proud of the well, complains about the lack of investment and low national visibility.
According to residents, the Violeto Well could be an important tourist hub, generating income and enhancing local culture.
An Underexplored Potential
Even being the largest gushing well in Brazil, the Violeto Well is still a sleeping giant in the interior of Piauí.
The visit is recommended for those looking to discover natural beauties outside the traditional circuit and experience a unique encounter with the force of water gushing from the ground in the midst of the hinterland.
With more infrastructure and promotion, the location has every potential to gain the recognition it deserves on the national scene.
