From Jaraguá do Sul, the Brazilian company became a global leader in providing technology for the naval industry, equipping everything from oil rigs to cruise ships
The “seal” from WEG has become synonymous with quality, robustness, and innovation. This reputation was built on decades of investment in technology and an aggressive global expansion strategy that consolidated the company as a leader in supplying the engines of the most modern ships.
WEG, a multinational born in Santa Catarina, has become a dominant force in the global naval industry. By 2025, the company is one of the largest suppliers of electric motors, automation systems, and integrated solutions for cargo ships, oil platforms, and cruise ships worldwide.
From Jaraguá do Sul to the World, the Journey of the Engines of the Most Modern Ships to the Naval Sector
Founded in 1961 in Jaraguá do Sul (SC), WEG started as an electric motor factory. Its entry into the Brazilian naval sector gained momentum before 2009, initially supplying high-performance marine paints for vessels like the tugs from Estaleiro Detroit.

While the whole of Europe debates the four-day week, Germany takes the opposite path and proposes ending the historic eight-hour daily limit to redistribute working hours throughout the week, but the Confederation of Trade Unions rejects the idea and advises against the change.
Success with coatings paved the way for a much broader offering. The company evolved from a supplier of components to a provider of complete solutions, including motors, generators, transformers, and automation systems, all integrated by its own engineering team.
More Than Motors, the Complete Solutions That Power Cargo Ships, Platforms, and Cruise Ships

WEG’s leadership is due to its ability to offer complete technological packages. The portfolio of electric motors is vast, ranging from the versatile W22 line, used in pumps and winches, to the powerful W60/Master line, which can reach 50,000 kW and is used in the main propulsion of large vessels.
In addition to motors, WEG provides advanced automation systems. Its Power Management System (PMS) optimizes fuel consumption and prevents blackouts on board. The company also offers complete diesel-electric propulsion solutions, ideal for cruise ships and other complex vessels.
The Global Expansion Strategy, Acquisitions, and Investments That Strengthened WEG in 2024 and 2025
To consolidate its global presence, WEG invested in strategic acquisitions. In 2024, the company acquired the Italian brand Cemp, specialized in motors for hazardous areas, such as oil platforms. In 2022, it had already purchased the Motion Control business from the also Italian Gefran.
Based on these acquisitions, WEG announced, in April 2025, an investment of 4 million euros in a new factory in Italy. The unit, which is set to begin operating in 2026, will expand the production capacity of low-voltage motors in Europe and strengthen the offering of solutions for the engines of the most modern ships.
Leadership in 2025, the Numbers That Prove WEG’s Strength in the Global Market
WEG’s financial results for 2024, released in April 2025, confirm its leadership position. The company recorded a net operating revenue of R$ 38 billion, a figure that reflects its enormous sales volume and penetration in the global market.
The Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) exceeded 34%, indicating high efficiency and profitability. An impressive fact is that 73% of WEG’s revenue in 2024 came from sustainable products, demonstrating the company’s alignment with the growing demand for eco-efficient solutions in the naval industry.
The “Seal” of Brazilian Quality, the International Certifications That Ensure Excellence
Global trust in WEG products is ensured by rigorous quality control and international certifications. The company holds seals such as ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment), and ISO 45001 (health and safety).
For the naval sector, which demands the highest safety standards, WEG products are approved by the leading classification societies in the world, such as the American ABS, the Norwegian DNV, and the French Bureau Veritas. These certifications are proof that the “Brazilian seal” is synonymous with excellence and reliability in any ocean on the planet.
