Sipap System Evolves Since 2020, Surges in Transaction Volume and Establishes a New Standard for Digital Payments in Paraguay
The so-called “Pix of Paraguay”, known as Sipap, has been gaining prominence by allowing instant transfers in the neighboring country.
Additionally, the system authorizes operations of up to G$ 10 million, which is approximately R$ 7,800, expanding its reach among users.
Since 2020, according to data from the Sipap system itself, the growth has been significant.

How much does it cost to live with dignity in Brazil? A study found that in all 79 regions analyzed, the necessary salary was above the minimum of R$ 1,621. In São Paulo, a family of four needs R$ 6,155 per month.
In that year, the monthly average was 680,000 operations, while in March 2023, this volume jumped to 52 million monthly transactions.
This advancement reinforces the rapid adoption of the model in Paraguay.
At the same time, the system has undergone important structural improvements over this period.
Evolution of the System and Continuous Operation
Initially, Sipap operated only during banking hours, which limited its use in daily life.
Subsequently, the system began to operate continuously, functioning 24 hours a day.
Now, both individuals and businesses can make real-time payments at any time.
Consequently, the speed of transactions has increased, while simultaneously reducing reliance on traditional processes.
Requirements to Use Sipap in Paraguay
To access the system, users need to meet specific requirements.
First, it is necessary to have Paraguayan documentation, even if it is for temporary residency.
Additionally, it is mandatory to open an account at a financial institution legally registered in Paraguay.
This way, the model ensures security and legality in financial operations.
According to economist Aníbal Insfrán, Sipap directly contributes to financial inclusion in the country.
In this context, many people without bank accounts are served by financial cooperatives integrated into the system.
Impacts on Financial Inclusion and the Economy
Thus, the system enhances the banking of the population, while facilitating access to financial services.
Moreover, by allowing instant payments, Sipap reduces delays in operations.
Consequently, there is also a decrease in the circulation of physical money.
In this way, the security of transactions tends to increase within the financial environment.
Use of Brazilian Pix in Paraguay Requires Caution
While Sipap advances locally, Brazilians visiting Paraguay can use Pix in cities like Ciudad del Este and Asunción.
This occurs through partnerships with fintechs and local institutions, especially in large stores.
However, some operations do not offer the same level of protection.
Especially when involving third-party keys outside the Paraguayan financial system, the risks increase.
In these cases, Paraguayan authorities cannot mediate refunds.
Therefore, consumers should act with caution when using these alternatives.
In light of this scenario, the growth of Sipap raises a relevant question about the future of digital payments in the region.
