A Brief Failure in Itaú Unibanco’s App Affected Transfers, Payments, and Receipts via Pix During Thursday Morning (19/02), According to Users, Downdetector, and the Official Position of the Bank
An instability in Pix from Itaú Unibanco affected the routine of clients right in the early hours of the day. Initially, users reported difficulties in making transfers, payments, and receipts through the app. As a result, the instant payments system was temporarily suspended for part of the user base.

According to Downdetector, a platform that monitors failures in digital services, the first spikes in complaints appeared around 10 AM. Within a few minutes, hundreds of reports began to indicate error messages, slowness, and access failures. Additionally, most reports indicated that the problem was concentrated in the bank’s own system and not in the national Pix infrastructure.
Instability Was Concentrated in the Bank’s App
As per posts on X (formerly Twitter), clients reported issues in everyday situations. Among them were payments for bills due that day, urgent transfers, and purchases that depended on Pix. Thus, the financial routine of various users was immediately impacted.

The Pix, created and managed by the Central Bank of Brazil since November 16, 2020, has solidified itself as the main payment method in the country. Therefore, any interruption, even temporary, tends to create a direct ripple effect among consumers and businesses. In this particular episode, the instability was associated with Itaú’s digital environment, as indicated by the reports recorded throughout the morning.
Itaú Recognizes Brief Instability and Activates Technical Teams
In response to mentions on social media, Itaú Unibanco stated that it was aware of the failure. Additionally, it declared that technical teams had been activated to fix the issue “as quickly as possible”. Later, when approached by news outlets, the bank confirmed the occurrence of a “brief instability”.
According to the official statement, a portion of the customer base was affected during the morning period. The institution apologized for the inconveniences. At the same time, it emphasized that it is working to fully normalize the service. However, by the end of the morning, no official timeline had been provided for the complete stabilization of the system.
Complaints Remained High and Debate Was Rekindled
Meanwhile, the volume of complaints on Downdetector remained high. This indicated that the suspension was not resolved immediately. Thus, the episode rekindled discussions about the Growing Dependence on Pix as a Central Tool in Brazilian Financial Transactions.
Since its official launch by the Central Bank in November 2020, the system has been widely used for payments, transfers, and purchases. Therefore, any operational failure directly impacts the routine of consumers. Additionally, situations like this demonstrate how technical instabilities are quickly amplified on social media.
Although classified as brief by the bank, the occurrence affected operations considered essential in daily life. While Itaú works to fully restore the service, customers are still waiting for the complete normalization of Pix in the App.
In Light of This Scenario, How Should Financial Institutions Balance Digital Expansion and Technical Stability to Ensure Ongoing User Trust?
