The Concession of Federal Highways in SC Is Closer Than Ever, but Toll Prices Raise Concerns and May Burden Residents!
Santa Catarina may soon see its federal highways under a new concession model. The state government has requested the Ministry of Transport (MT) to include BR 153, BR 282, BR 470, and BR 480 on the list of planned concessions by the federal government. The idea is to promote a leaner concession, with shorter contracts and less investment required from the concessionaire companies.
The announcement was made by the executive secretary of the Ministry of Transport, George Santoro, who explained the proposal of the Lula 3 government.
According to him, the goal is to adopt “smart” concessions, which would divide the state into three lots, including both federal (BRs) and state (SCs) roads.

Unclaimed funds will enter a new phase this Tuesday: banks must send funds to the government, while R$ 10.5 billion in idle funds could help finance Desenrola 2.0 and ensure debt renegotiation within the financial system.
However, these sections in Santa Catarina are still being studied, while other states already have ongoing concessions.
The deputy secretary of Infrastructure in SC, Ricardo Grando, indicated that the state is skeptical about the proposed toll cost in the proposed model.
According to him, the rate presented by the MT would be R$ 0.18 per kilometer traveled, which means that a 100 km journey would cost R$ 18.
Grando explained that before moving forward with concessions for state roads, the state intends to reform and recover these sections, leaving concessions as a future possibility.
“We accept this, yes, and we asked the federal government to make the concessions for BRs 153, 282, 470, and 480,” Grando stated.
What Are the Most Expensive Tolls in 2024?
In 2024, the title of the most expensive toll on Brazil’s federal highways is in Rio Grande do Sul. The concessionaire Ecosul, which manages sections of BRs 116 and 392, applied a 28.9% increase to the toll, raising the cost to R$ 19.60 for passenger vehicles.
This rate, stipulated by the National Agency of Land Transport (ANTT), marks the highest toll among federal highways, reflecting the impact of significant adjustments for drivers traveling through the state.
