Fisherman Finds Submerged Car in Minnesota Lake and Helps Police Close Investigation into Mysterious Disappearance of Roy Benn, Missing Since 1967

An mystery that intrigued the Minnesota police for nearly six decades has reached an unexpected conclusion. The responsible party was a local fisherman who, entirely by accident, found the car of a man who had been missing since 1967.

Unexpected Discovery

While using sonar in a popular lake, Brody Loch identified something strange at the bottom of the water. What appeared to be just another obstacle turned out to be a key piece in an old case.

It was 100% luck. If my friend hadn’t caught that fish, we would have kept going down the river and never found it,” Loch told the Guardian newspaper.

The vehicle retrieved from the lake was a 1960s Buick. The operation involved police divers and a towing team.

Inside it were human remains, confirmed to belong to Roy Benn, who went missing in September 1967.

The Benn Case

At the time, Roy, 59, was last seen driving a metallic blue 1963 Buick Electra. The police report stated that he had disappeared while carrying a significant amount of money.

Despite extensive searches, no concrete leads were found, and the case was eventually closed. In 1975, Benn was declared dead, but many questions remained.

According to local newspapers, Roy’s wife had passed away a year earlier. His brother, Walter Benn, assisted authorities in the search but also found no answers. The lack of information fueled the family’s uncertainty for decades.

Expected Conclusion

For the police, the discovery may finally close the long investigation. “We are just grateful that we have likely finally gotten the lead we needed to bring closure to this family,” said Benton County Sheriff Troy Heck.

Police Chief Brandon Silgjord highlighted the role of the fisherman. “A lot of credit goes to the fisherman who was able to spot that and still had the foresight to report it. Artifacts, pieces of clothing, and other items like that will certainly help put all the pieces of this story together.
