The Búzios Field, located in the pre-salt layer of the Santos Basin, has finally achieved a new production record with Petrobras at the forefront. The impressive mark of 800 thousand barrels of oil daily was reached after the operation began of the sixth production unit, the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré.
This milestone has established Búzios as one of Brazil’s main oil assets. Petrobras started production in the Búzios Field in 2018, and since then, the field has undergone various expansions and technological advancements. Before that, learn more about this field in the following video:
In January 2024, the field had already reached 782 thousand barrels of oil per day. The new record, achieved on February 24, 2025, marks a significant advancement in pre-salt exploration.

According to information from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), this production represents one of the highest performances of the national oil industry.
The new floating production, storage, and offloading unit (FPSO in English) commenced operations on February 15, 2025, further boosting the field’s production.
In addition to Almirante Tamandaré, five other platforms are already operating in the area: P-74, P-75, P-76, P-77 and Almirante Barroso. Petrobras, the field operator, celebrates this result as a significant milestone in the history of offshore production in the country.
According to Magda Chambriard, president of Petrobras, this record reflects the company’s commitment to investing in technology and operational efficiency.
“This significant production milestone is the result of the dedication of the technical teams and the constant search for innovative solutions. Petrobras remains focused on producing sustainably, utilizing new technologies, and maximizing the utilization of the Búzios Field reserves. Our goal is to continue advancing and ensure safe and efficient production”, highlighted the executive.
Increase in Capacity with the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré
The FPSO Almirante Tamandaré is the largest unit of its kind in operation in Brazil. The platform can produce up to 225 thousand barrels of oil per day, in addition to processing 12 million cubic meters of gas daily.
The unit was built at the CMHI shipyard in China and transported to Brazil in October 2024. Its arrival marks the beginning of a new phase of production expansion in Búzios.
According to Sylvia Anjos, director of Exploration and Production at Petrobras, the forecast is that production in the field will reach 1 million barrels of oil per day in a short period of time.
“The arrival of the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré marks a new growth cycle. Our projection for the coming years is that Búzios’ production will reach 1.5 million barrels per day by 2030. This demonstrates the potential of this field and the commitment of Petrobras to expand its production capacity”, she explained.
Record History of the Búzios Field
The Búzios Field, since the beginning of its operations in 2018, has stood out for its high productivity.
The previous record occurred in January 2024, when production reached 782 thousand barrels per day. In March of the same year, the field reached the mark of 1 billion barrels of oil accumulated.
In recognition of its operational efficiency, Petrobras received, in 2020, the OTC (Offshore Technology Conference) Award for innovative technologies applied in Búzios.
The adopted solutions increased productivity, reduced costs, and ensured greater safety in operations.
Currently, the company is conducting a new 4D seismic data survey to further optimize production.
This study will enable more accurate monitoring of reservoirs, allowing improvements in oil extraction efficiency.
Unmatched Potential of Búzios
Operated by Petrobras, in partnership with the companies CNOOC, CNPC and PPSA, the Búzios Field ranks among the largest discoveries in Brazilian pre-salt.
Its wells are more than 2 thousand meters deep, in a geological reserve of impressive dimensions. The thickness of the reservoir is equivalent to the height of the Sugarloaf Mountain, while its extent is more than twice the size of the Guanabara Bay.
For Luiz Otávio Schmall dos Santos, Executive Manager of the Búzios Field, recent advancements represent a great source of pride.
“The milestone of 800 thousand barrels daily is another chapter in the success story of Búzios. With the progressive deployment of the FPSO Almirante Tamandaré, we will begin an intense effort to reach our next goal: to achieve 1 million barrels per day in the near future”, he stated.
With continuous investments, new units planned, and technological advancements, the Búzios Field continues to establish itself as one of the most promising assets of Petrobras.
