The Promef
Launched in 2004, the Promef would mark the resurgence of the shipbuilding industry in the country, but without a defined industrial policy for the sector from the federal government, it soon sank.
The program planned the construction of 49 ships, but 23 of these orders were canceled or suspended, including 3 of them, Panamax model, which had construction underway at the Mauá shipyard in Niterói (RJ).
Aframax ships have a loading capacity in the range of 65 thousand to 80 thousand deadweight tons (DWT) and their dimensions aim to meet the limitations of the locks of the Panama Canal.
The Tanker Garrincha is the penultimate ship of the Promef, with only the Aframax Portinari left to be delivered, which is under construction at the EAS (Atlântico Sul Shipyard).
The EAS also suffered from cancellations by Transpetro and lost seven contracts, along with another shipyard in Pernambuco, Vard Promar, which had two contracts canceled.
Transpetro has already received 25 ships from the Promef, ten Suezmax and four Aframax built at the EAS; four product tankers and one Panamax manufactured at the Mauá Shipyard; and six gas carriers made at Vard Promar.
