Offshore Units That Employed About 10 Thousand People in Rio Grande Are Already Being Scrapped. Union Protests

[supsystic-social-sharing id=’1′]This is not sensationalism, no matter how unbelievable this news may seem.  Unbelievably, Petrobras Sold the P-71 and P-72 Units for dismantling. The plants, development, invested money, everything that was bought and countless months of work are simply being turned into scrap at this moment at the Ecovix shipyard in Rio Grande do Sul. The company that is carrying out the cuts is Gerdau after winning the bid not long ago. Pedro Parente has been signaling for some time that he would make this decision in order to cut costs. Many are protesting because these works provided jobs for around 10 thousand professionals.

The Metalworkers Union of Rio Grande and São José do Norte was also anticipating this “merciful guillotine” by Petrobras in the state’s naval industry. Benito Gonçalves, who is the president of the local union, says it is a true violation of the nation and that it is directly harming workers, fathers, and mothers of families in RS. The union has already filed a lawsuit requesting explanations that justify this dismantling. If the problem was technology for the repurposing of these units, why didn’t Petrobras consider the interest of COSCO, the Chinese company that wanted to take over these platforms and complete the remaining work.

“Benito Gonçalves, shows all his irritation when talking about this problem: “One must consider all the qualifications of this personnel, all the effort to become a metalworker and to throw us in the trash along with these parts. Nothing justifies using worked material to be sold as scrap.”

This decision is the peak of Petrobras and the federal government’s disregard, through the Ministry of Mines and Energy, towards the state’s naval hub. The state-owned company discontinued a series of orders it made to the Rio Grande Shipyard. Gerdau will take all materials to one of its steel plants located in the Porto Alegre Metropolitan Region.” Source: Petronotícias
