Renault Alaskan Ends Production in 2025: Understand the Reasons for the End of the Pickup Based on the Nissan Frontier and Why the Model Never Reached the Brazilian Market.
The Japanese automaker Nissan announced on March 28 that it will stop production of the Frontier pickup in Argentina. From now on, a new generation of the model will be manufactured exclusively in Mexico, with a focus on supplying the Latin American markets. With this change, Nissan’s factory in Córdoba, which operated in partnership with Renault, will cease vehicle production and will only act as an import center — a business model similar to that adopted by Ford in Brazil, since it ceased its industrial operations in the country.
This decision brings uncertainties about the future of the Argentine plant and has already directly resulted in the end of production of the Renault Alaskan, a pickup derived from the Frontier that shared the same assembly line. The measure represents a strategic restructuring of Nissan in the region and may have significant impacts on the automotive production chain in Mercosur.
The End of the French Pickup
As a result, the Renault Alaskan, a mid-sized pickup derived from the Nissan Frontier that was considered for the Brazilian market a few years ago, will also be discontinued. This consideration came when the partnership formed between the two manufacturers and Mercedes-Benz announced an agreement to manufacture pickups in Córdoba, Argentina. According to Renault, the model will go out of production in November.

Argentina was the only country where the pickup was still being produced, as production in Spain and Mexico was shut down a few years ago. According to a statement issued by the Argentine automaker, the Alaskan was conceived as a joint project with Nissan. The agreement stipulated that the duration of production would be extended until December of this year. The decision was made to not renew or continue the agreement, thus, the Renault Alaskan will be discontinued.
Produced in Córdoba, Argentina, since 2020, the pickup was nothing more than a Nissan Frontier with French brand emblems. Because it had no equipment or engine that differentiated it from the Frontier, the Alaskan never managed to achieve significant sales figures or reach export to other Latin American countries.
Find Out How Much the Renault Alaskan Costs in 2025
The Renault Alaskan will be discontinued this year; however, it is important to mention that the model is being sold in the Argentine market with suggested prices between 38.3 million and 56.1 million Argentine pesos, equivalent to about R$ 206,000 and R$ 301,800 in direct conversion at the current exchange rate, respectively.
The agreement between the brands also led to the Mercedes-Benz Classe X, another mid-sized pickup based on the Nissan Frontier, which aimed to bring a German brand to the segment, but with a more luxurious proposal.
Despite having versions equipped with a V6 turbo diesel engine from Mercedes-Benz, the Classe X turned out to be a sales failure due to its high price and was discontinued in 2019, just one year after its launch.
The factory of the partnership between the automakers in Argentina will receive upgrades to accommodate the production of the Niagara pickup, which will feature a monocoque structure to compete in Latin America against the Fiat Toro, Ford Maverick, and Ram Rampage.
Why the Renault Alaskan Does Not Come to Brazil?
The Alaskan follows the same pattern as these competing models. In Argentina, the 2.3 turbo diesel engine has two versions, one with 160 hp and 403 Nm and another with 190 hp and 450 Nm. For Brazil, the Renault Alaskan with 190 hp and a 7-speed automatic transmission would be competitive. Its payload reaches 1,100 kg, depending on the version.
According to the Head of Communications Latam at Groupe Renault, Carlos Henrique Ferreira, the Renault Alaskan pickup is always on their meeting tables, but they have yet to find the right moment to bring it to Brazil. Explaining in detail, the Renault executive states that the Argentine economy is still very unstable, with some very high inflation spikes. Therefore, there is no certainty about the costs.
