Two national holidays still promise extended rest for Brazilians in 2025. Black Consciousness Day, on November 20, and Christmas, on December 25, fall on Thursdays, which opens the possibility of extending the break with Friday and the weekend.

The forecast mobilizes workers and companies across Brazil, who are organizing to take better advantage of the long holidays.

But be careful: the day off on the following Friday is not guaranteed. The decision depends on each employer’s discretion, according to the company’s internal policy.

What Are the Long Holidays in 2025?

The national holidays that can still be extended this year are:

November 20 (Thursday) – Black Consciousness Day
December 25 (Thursday) – Christmas

These dates offer the chance for four days of rest, provided there is an approval for Friday off. A great opportunity for quick trips, family moments, or even a prolonged break from routine.

Holidays That Fall on the Weekend

In addition to the extendable ones, four other national holidays remaining in 2025 will fall on Saturday or Sunday:

September 7 (Sunday) – Independence Day
October 12 (Sunday) – Our Lady of Aparecida
November 2 (Sunday) – All Souls’ Day
November 15 (Saturday) – Republic Day

These dates do not offer the possibility of an extension, which may frustrate those hoping for more breaks throughout the second semester.

Difference Between Holiday and Optional Day Off

Many people are still confused about the terms. A national holiday is an officially recognized date by law, whether at federal, state, or municipal levels.

An optional day off depends on the decision of the public agency or private company.

An example of this was Corpus Christi, celebrated on June 19. This date is an optional day off and, therefore, only some capitals in the country adopted it as a holiday.
