At the 7th Automotive Quality Seminar, Naturgy presented discussions on the future of the CNG market in Rio de Janeiro. The event highlighted important strategies for territorial expansion and showcased the economic benefits that the use of CNG can provide to consumers, becoming essential for fuel economy.
The company also emphasized how compressed natural gas has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. Additionally, they discussed how the distribution infrastructure is preparing to meet the growing demand, ensuring that CNG becomes an increasingly viable and attractive alternative in the state.

Naturgy’s Investments in the CNG Sector
To further expand the use of CNG, Naturgy has directed efforts and investments toward new regions and to increase the number of stations in already served areas. In 2023, the company connected 41 new CNG stations in the state of Rio de Janeiro, a number nearly doubled compared to previous years. For 2024, 19 new stations have already been connected, with a projection to reach 40 new stations by the end of the year. These new stations represent a significant investment, approximately R$ 15 million just for the connection of new locations, not accounting for expenses related to network expansion and infrastructure improvements.
In addition to this territorial expansion, Rafael Miranda pointed out that the CNG market has considerable growth potential, especially with the adaptation of heavy vehicles like trucks. The company sees these initiatives as essential to follow the trends in the market.
CNG, Energy Transition, and Economic Advantages
Miranda also underscored that Naturgy is actively involved in the energy transition of major automotive manufacturers, always seeking ways to encourage the increase in CNG sales. A crucial point is the importance of demonstrating to consumers the benefits of compressed natural gas compared to other fuels. In terms of fuel economy, CNG offers higher efficiency. With R$ 100 worth of CNG, for example, a driver can travel 328 km, compared to 180 km using ethanol and 181 km with gasoline. When it comes to CO2 reduction, CNG shows a decrease of 20% to 30% in emissions compared to gasoline.
Advertising Campaign and Key Participants
In 2023, Naturgy launched a comprehensive advertising campaign aimed at informing the public about the advantages of CNG, and is already planning a new campaign for 2024. The goal is to help users calculate the savings achieved through the use of CNG in their vehicles. Rafael Miranda explained that these initiatives aim to reinforce the importance of the market and the public perception of the benefits of compressed natural gas.
Felipe Peixoto, interim secretary of Energy and Economy of the Sea, Celso Mattos, vice president of Firjan and president of Sindirepa, Fernando Montera, manager of Oil and Gas Scenarios, and Wladimir Paschoal, Advisor of Agenersa, also participated in the event.
Seminar and Challenges of the Automotive Sector
