The French startup Constellation Technologies & Operations (CTO) is about to take a revolutionary step: launching the first satellite internet network using 5G mmWave technology. The project could transform the way telecommunications operate, bringing ultra-fast and low-latency connections directly from space.

The Need for a New Internet Infrastructure

The satellite is a device that orbits the Earth and can send internet signals anywhere. CTO will use satellites in a lower orbit and new 5G mmWave technology to provide fast internet with less delay.

Although the internet has become a fundamental pillar of modern society, millions of people still live without access to a reliable connection. Ground infrastructures struggle to cover remote areas, making it impractical to expand traditional networks.

The 5G mmWave technology is a promising solution. Utilizing frequencies between 24 GHz and 100 GHz, it offers speeds far superior to conventional 5G. CTO aims to take this innovation to space, eliminating the limitations of terrestrial infrastructures and providing global connectivity.

The Role of Constellation Technologies & Operations (CTO)

CTO relies on Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) satellites, which are significantly closer to the Earth than traditional geostationary satellites. This reduces connection response time, ensuring a smoother online experience.

CTO’s pilot project, called Early Test, is a “regenerative payload,” meaning a system capable of processing and retransmitting internet signals directly from space. This technology will be an essential pillar for the space 5G mmWave infrastructure.

The Historic Launch of the Satellite

Before reaching the skies, the equipment underwent rigorous tests on Earth, simulating the extreme conditions of space. The goal is to ensure that the technology works perfectly when it is in orbit.

CTO has a significant milestone ahead: the first launch of its 5G mmWave payload is scheduled for June 2025. This will be the first real test of high-speed internet transmission via satellite using this technology.

Advantages of 5G mmWave Satellite Technology

The main differentiator of 5G mmWave via satellite is the ability to offer extremely high speeds and reduced latency, allowing for instant data transmission. This is crucial for applications such as telemedicine, 8K streaming, and online gaming without delays.

With this new infrastructure, a range of possibilities opens up for emerging technologies, such as:

  • Autonomous vehicles, which depend on fast and reliable communication.
  • Smart cities, with sensors connected in real-time.
  • Industry 4.0, where automation needs agile connections to operate efficiently.

CTO’s Satellite Sharing Model

Unlike other space initiatives, CTO proposes a satellite sharing model. This means that multiple telecommunications operators will be able to use the same infrastructure, reducing costs and optimizing global coverage.

The competition in the satellite communications sector is becoming increasingly fierce, with giants like SpaceX and Amazon launching their own constellations. However, CTO’s innovative approach could be a game changer by offering a shared solution for internet providers, further democratizing access to space connectivity.
