Even though they are not yet working, new radars are already being installed on BR-163, the highway with the highest number of speeding fines in this state.
BR-163, known for leading the ranking of traffic violations in Mato Grosso do Sul, is about to receive reinforcement in speed control with the installation of new radars.
Even without a set date for activating the equipment, the concessionaire CCR MSVia has begun the process of installing the devices along the highway.
According to information provided to Campo Grande News, The new radars are part of a strategic plan to increase road safety and reduce the number of accidents, especially those caused by speeding, one of the main infractions recorded in the region.

According to CCR, the installation of the devices precedes the formal approval of the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT), responsible for regulating and authorizing the operation of inspection systems.
Installation before official release
Although the equipment is not yet in operation, CCR MSVia chose to bring forward the assembly as a way of accelerating the highway modernization process.
The company is awaiting the formalization of an addendum to the concession contract with ANTT, which will allow the radars to operate legally and in accordance with the technical requirements of the federal government.
In a note sent to the press, the dealership explained that the measure was taken on its own initiative, motivated by the urgency to reinforce safety on the tracks.
The expectation is that the new devices will significantly contribute to reducing accidents and more efficient traffic control.
“The concessionaire continues to implement measures such as reinforcing signage, installing warning systems and intensive monitoring by 477 cameras distributed along the highway,” declared CCR in an official statement.
Approval depends on ANTT
ANTT confirmed that the process of reimplanting the radars is in the final stages of processing and will be deliberated at a board meeting.
The additional term that enables the operation of the new equipment must undergo technical and legal evaluation before being made official.
According to the agency, the early implementation of the devices was a decision by CCR MSVia itself, which considered the high rate of infractions and the need for urgent measures to guarantee the integrity of BR-163 users.
Leader in speeding violations
The data reinforces the need for greater monitoring: in 2024, BR-163 registered an impressive 72,7 thousand speeding tickets for speeding up to 20% above the permitted limit.
This number is seven times higher than the total number of speeding violations on the other six federal highways that cross the state.
The second most common infraction is also related to disregarding speed limits., with 14.279 occurrences of drivers driving between 20% and 50% above the permitted speed.
This data was released by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) and highlights worrying behavior on the part of drivers traveling on the highway.
BR-163: a strategic and problematic highway
BR-163 is one of the main grain transport routes in the country, crossing Mato Grosso do Sul and connecting producing regions to the Port of Paranaguá, in Paraná.
Its strategic role for the economy makes the need to guarantee safety and fluidity in traffic even more urgent.
Despite investments in infrastructure, the highway collects complaints from drivers about dangerous sections, lack of adequate signage and inefficient monitoring, which contributes to the high number of infractions and accidents.
Studies show that highways with a greater presence of radars and cameras tend to show significant drops in the number of deaths and injuries.
The installation of new equipment on BR-163 follows this logic, aiming to reduce fatal accidents caused, above all, by excessive speed.
Advances in electronic monitoring
The use of monitoring and control technologies has become increasingly common on federal highways.
CCR MSVia already operates a robust system with almost 500 cameras, in addition to sensors and information panels that help guide drivers in real time.
With the arrival of the new radars, the expectation is that the system will become even more effective.
The company did not disclose the exact number of devices that will be activated, but it is estimated that dozens of new inspection points will be incorporated in critical sections.
Other highways follow the trend
The use of radars as a control tool is not exclusive to BR-163.
Several federal and state highways have invested in reinforcing electronic monitoring as a way of inhibiting risky behavior on the part of drivers.
According to Ministry of Transport, the presence of radars is directly linked to the reduction in the number of traffic deaths, especially when combined with education and effective signage.
In states such as São Paulo and Paraná, the installation of radars at strategic points resulted in a drop of up to 40% in the number of fatal accidents in the last five years.
This type of data reinforces the effectiveness of the model adopted by CCR MSVia on BR-163.
Challenges and criticism
Despite advances, There are criticisms from drivers who see radars as a “fine industry”, especially when there is no clear signage or when speed limits vary frequently over short stretches.
Traffic experts, however, reinforce that The function of radars is educational and preventive, not tax collection, as long as they are used transparently and accompanied by awareness campaigns.
To avoid this type of controversy, CCR MSVia promises to reinforce signage and disclose detailed information about the locations where new equipment will be installed, ensuring that drivers are properly informed.
Now we want to know: Do you believe that installing more radars will actually improve road safety or will it just increase the number of fines?
