Rolls-Royce Bets on Innovation with 12-Cylinder Engine for Faster, More Powerful Superyachts with Lower Environmental Impact.
Rolls-Royce announced the launch of a new high-power marine engine aimed at fast vessels such as luxury yachts, patrol boats, and sport fishing.
This is the model 12V2000 M96Z, which takes the MTU 2000 series to a new technological and environmental level. The debut is scheduled for 2026.
More Power and Lower Emissions
With a power output of 1,634 kW (2,222 mhp), the new engine surpasses the performance of its predecessor, the 12V2000 M96X, which offered 1,472 kW (2,002 mhp).

The model uses an advanced turbocharger system that ensures stronger acceleration and reduced gas emissions. According to Rolls-Royce, this translates into a more eco-friendly solution for the propulsion of fast vessels.
The engine is compatible with renewable diesel based on HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Amid growing criticisms about the carbon footprint of luxury yachts, the company sees the new model as part of a technological response for a cleaner sector.

Maximum Performance and Reinforced Construction
In addition to the power increase, the engine features significant mechanical improvements. The crankcase has been reinforced, along with the cylinder heads and pistons.
This structural update enhances reliability and durability of the system even under severe usage conditions.
According to Rolls-Royce Power Systems CEO, Dr. Jörg Stratmann, the new version represents the pinnacle of performance and acceleration. “This is another milestone in our commitment to providing first-class propulsion solutions for demanding marine applications,” he stated in a statement.
Complete Offering and Focus on the Future
Rolls-Royce also highlighted its “Bridge-to-Propeller“ strategy, which involves delivering complete propulsion systems for yachts.
This includes not only the most modern MTU engines but also hybrid solutions, pod drives, automation systems, and global services.
For Denise Kurtulus, Senior Vice President Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, this integrated offering is a differentiator in the international market. “We are expanding our leadership in the sector with a unique combination of technology and support,” she stated.
The MTU 2000 series is used in various applications, including military and rail vehicles. The new 12V2000 M96Z maintains this tradition, but with a renewed focus on environmental efficiency.
The launch marks an important step in the company’s effort to align high-level performance with environmental responsibility in the nautical segment.
