According to Abel L. Packer, director of SciELO Brazil, interviewed by Click Petroleum and Gas Portal, the platform is a natural extension of the SciELO Program, whose initial proposal focused on academic journals.
Now, this expansion aims to promote the transition from printed books to digital open access formats, allowing students, teachers, and researchers to explore academic content without financial or geographical barriers.
More Than 2,000 Titles Available, With Access to 65% of the Collection
The SciELO Books collection includes more than 2,000 indexed books and 17,000 chapters. As Packer explained to Click Petroleum and Gas, about 65% of the collection is available in open access, representing more than 1,300 free titles that cover a wide range of scientific and academic disciplines.
These books are selected based on rigorous criteria, which include academic quality and relevance of the works.
“The titles must undergo a careful evaluation carried out by our Advisory Committee”, explained the director. In addition, the project collaborates with renowned university and academic publishers, ensuring the credibility of the available material.
Democratization of Access to Knowledge
SciELO Books is a game changer in the democratization of access to knowledge.
According to Abel L. Packer, the project breaks the barriers imposed by the traditional model of printed publication, which often faces distribution limitations.
Thanks to digitization, e-books are easily found and accessed across various platforms, such as Google Books, Amazon, and international academic databases.
Moreover, the advanced infrastructure of the platform enables interoperability with world-renowned databases, promoting the visibility of Brazilian and Latin American research. “Our goal is to make scientific knowledge a global public good”, highlighted the director.
Expansion Plans and Technological Advances
SciELO Books continues to evolve. Among the expansion plans is the use of artificial intelligence to enhance the accessibility of the collection, with initiatives that include the description of images, graphs, and tables for users with visual impairments.
The team is also developing improvements to the metadata of each work, further facilitating its location in academic search engines.
Another ambitious goal is to transform the platform into a robust bibliometric database of books. This will allow for detailed monitoring of citations and other indicators that can benefit researchers, publishers, and institutions.
How to Explore the Collection
To access the wealth available in SciELO Books, users have intuitive tools. It is possible to search for titles, authors, ISBNs, publishers, publication years, or areas of interest.
Additionally, each book features a detailed page, with summaries, information about the chapters, and direct download links.
“We are always looking for ways to expand our network of partner publishers”, explained Packer.
The networking effort has already begun to cross borders, with neighboring countries interested in replicating the model in the form of national collections.
A Milestone for Brazilian Science
With principles such as accessibility, inclusion, and global impact, SciELO Books is solidifying Brazilian science on the international stage.
Furthermore, by encouraging simultaneous publication in digital and printed formats, the project redefines the future of academic production.
Given so many benefits, the question arises: is this model of open access the definitive future for all scientific publications in Brazil? Share your opinion in the comments!
