In the State of Bahia, the Forestry Sector Shows Great Importance in Economic and Social Indicators, Generating Jobs and Increasing Brazil’s GDP
The forestry sector in the state of Bahia has contributed 5.4% to the state GDP and is generating a total of 230,000 jobs, in addition to various social projects. Bracell, a major company from the Royal Golden Eagle group, is directly linked to these indicators. In the state, the company is headquartered in Camaçari, in the metropolitan region of the capital Salvador. The company’s annual production is around 500,000 tons of dissolving pulp, generating 4,000 direct jobs and operating in 35 municipalities in the state.

These figures were generated by the Government of the State of Bahia, which through the Department of Economic Development – SDE, has been showing the numbers from the segments since last year. According to João Leão, Secretary of Economic Development of the State, “We welcome Bracell, one of the largest producers of dissolving pulp in the world, an example of quality, technology, and sustainable development, but its commitment to our state goes beyond that; the investment in social development benefits more than 60,000 people in three territories in Bahia. And this is what we are building in this important relationship with the sector: we want economic development linked to social and human development.”

Last year, Bracell generated R$ 8 million in taxes in the municipality and R$ 2 million in taxes to the state. In social projects, the company has a program to encourage rural entrepreneurship in the North Coast and Agreste regions of Bahia.
According to Mouana Fonseca, manager of Institutional Relations and Social Responsibility at Bracell BA, “Bracell’s entrepreneurship program trains leaders so that they can develop projects and access tenders that enhance their social businesses, giving them more autonomy. Just this year, we had four productive groups with projects accessing tenders.”
