Young man from a rural village in Uttar Pradesh overcame language, distance, and income barriers to reach one of the most prestigious universities in the United States, in a journey marked by exceptional school performance, educational support, and plans to return to India.
Anurag Tiwari, son of a farmer and a housewife from the village of Sarasan, in the Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh, achieved 98.2% in the 12th-grade CBSE exams and secured a full scholarship at Cornell University in the United States.
The achievement was recorded in 2020 and gained attention in the Indian press for combining high academic performance, rural origin, and access to an Ivy League university.
The result was announced in July 2020, when Anurag was 18 years old and studying at VidyaGyan Sitapur, a residential school focused on young people from rural areas and low-income families.

Science is still trying to understand how a two-year-old child with an IQ of 156, capable of naming 35 capitals, counting in Spanish, and recognizing geometric shapes, joined Mensa at 845 days old and became one of the rarest child prodigies ever recorded in the gifted club.
According to Moneycontrol, he intended to study Economics and Mathematics at Cornell, which was his top choice in the application process.
Performance in CBSE paved the way for Cornell
The score of 98.2% came from strong performance in Humanities, an area chosen by Anurag after the 10th grade.
He achieved the highest marks in History and Economics, 99 in Political Science, 97 in English, and 95 in Mathematics, according to data published by India Today.
In addition to the Indian school exam scores, Anurag also took the SAT, an assessment used in U.S. university admissions.
Preparation began in the 11th grade, and the student achieved 1,370 points on the SAT, a result that strengthened the international application alongside his academic record.
Admission to Cornell was accompanied by a 100% scholarship, a decisive factor in making the trip to the United States feasible.
Without this financial support, studying at an elite American university would be far from the reality of a family involved in agriculture in a northern Indian village.
Move to Sitapur transformed the study routine
Before reaching the international university circuit, Anurag studied at a primary school in his village.
In 2013, he moved to the Sitapur campus of VidyaGyan, an initiative linked to the Shiv Nadar Foundation that serves talented students from economically vulnerable families in Uttar Pradesh.
The transfer was decisive because it put the student in contact with teachers, counselors, and a more structured academic routine.
To Moneycontrol, Anurag stated that he found in the institution a quality of education, guidance, and mentorship superior to what he had before, which helped expand his possibilities.
The process, however, involved a significant family break.
Anurag’s three older sisters helped convince their parents to first allow him to go to VidyaGyan and then to continue the project of studying outside India.
English was one of the obstacles in the journey
Adapting to the residential school also brought the challenge of language.
Although he had studied in a semi-English primary school, Anurag found a more demanding environment in Sitapur and had to adjust to the level of communication required by the new academic routine.
With the support of teachers, peers, and older students, he gradually advanced until he achieved sufficient fluency to keep up with his studies and prepare for international selection processes.
This journey helped transform an initial limitation into a central part of his educational trajectory.
Preparation for foreign universities emerged after teachers and counselors presented academic paths outside India.
Anurag told India Today that he chose Cornell for its research structure, the level of its faculty, and the proposal for broad student development.
Rural origin amplified the impact of the case
The story had an impact because Anurag went from Sarasan, a rural community in Uttar Pradesh, to an Ivy League institution.
According to Moneycontrol, he came from an agricultural income family, with a farmer father, a homemaker mother, and three older sisters.
In the village, the achievement gained collective significance.
Anurag reported to Moneycontrol that the residents were excited about the result and the prospect of him being the first person from the region to go abroad for higher education.
The case also highlighted the role of schools aimed at identifying talent outside major urban centers.
VidyaGyan, created by the Shiv Nadar Foundation, selects students from low-income rural families and offers free education on campuses like those in Sitapur and Bulandshahr.
Plans include returning to India
Even with acceptance in the United States, Anurag stated that he did not intend to remain permanently outside the country.
At Moneycontrol, he said he sought international exposure but wished to return to India, become an economist, and, in the future, open a school in his village.
The intention to return gave the story a dimension beyond individual achievement.
The student associated his education in Economics and Mathematics with the goal of contributing to his community and to other young people who, like him, rely on educational opportunities to compete in broader spaces.
Anurag’s journey involved a combination of academic performance, family support, school guidance, and access to a structure that did not exist in his home community.
His acceptance to Cornell was thus presented by the Indian press as a result of personal merit and an educational network capable of reaching students from rural villages.
