Starlink Launched a Rental Model for the Satellite Internet Kit, Allowing Access to the Service Without an Initial Purchase. The Proposal Aims to Expand the Network’s Reach and Attract Users Who Avoid High Equipment Investments.
Starlink, Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, has begun offering in some countries a new way to access the service: the rental of the installation kit, which includes the antenna, router, and cables.
The initiative allows new users to access the company’s high-speed internet without needing to buy the equipment, subject to a one-time activation fee and a monthly usage fee for the kit.
According to information from the company itself, the measure seeks to broaden access to the service and cater to people who prefer to avoid the higher initial investment required to purchase the hardware.

How Starlink Rentals Work
In the new model, the customer does not need to purchase the kit.
The user pays an activation fee followed by a monthly charge for the use of the equipment, in addition to the internet plan subscription fee.
This way, it is possible to use the service without making an immediate purchase of the materials.
The option appears during the ordering process on the Starlink website, alongside the purchase alternative.
The company states that the rental depends on availability in the country and the provided address, and that not all regions currently have this option.
Who Can Rent the Kit
According to Starlink, the rental model is available only for fixed residential and commercial plans, identified as Standard and Priority, respectively.
The company clarifies that the option is not available for terrestrial or maritime mobility services, such as motorhomes and vessels.
Each residential account can have only one rented kit, according to the usage policy disclosed by the company.
Availability and Address Verification
The availability of rentals varies by region.
During the purchase process, the Starlink system automatically checks if the provided address is eligible to receive the option.
If the “rent” option does not appear, the service is not yet available at that location.
The company claims it has been gradually expanding the rental offer in markets where there is higher demand or where the entry cost has been an obstacle to new subscriber adoption.
How to Request the Service
To contract the service, the interested party must confirm the address where they intend to use the internet and choose the most suitable plan type.
Then, they should:
- Access the Starlink website.
- Select the type of use — residential or fixed commercial.
- Input the installation address.
- Click on “Order Now.”
If the rental is available, the system will display the options for purchase or rental of the kit, and the user can complete their order.
Billing and Start of the Monthly Fee
Starlink charges a one-time activation fee at the time of ordering.
After receiving the kit and activating the service, the counting of the monthly rental fee begins, which will always be charged on the same date.
If the customer does not activate the service within 30 days after the kit is sent, the monthly charge starts automatically.
According to the company, this measure prevents equipment from remaining inactive for long periods.
How to Purchase the Kit After the Rental
Users who initially opted for the rental and wish to acquire the equipment can request the purchase directly from Starlink.
The procedure is done through the company’s support, which guides the customer on prices and conditions for converting the rental into a purchase.
This option, according to telecommunications industry analysts, allows testing the service before investing in the equipment, which is considered strategic in locations where network performance is still being evaluated.
Advantages and Limitations
Experts point out that the rental model can lower entry barriers for users who do not want to invest immediately in the complete kit.
The model also transfers to the company the responsibility for maintenance or replacement of the equipment.
However, industry professionals observe that the total cost may be higher over time if the user keeps the service for several years, making the purchase more advantageous in certain scenarios.
Starlink stated that the goal is to offer more flexibility to consumers and expand the network’s reach in regions that still face connectivity difficulties.
The company has not disclosed timelines to expand the rental model to all countries in Latin America.
Satellite Internet Expansion
Starlink operates with a constellation of thousands of satellites in low orbit, which allows for internet coverage in remote areas or with limited infrastructure.
The service has been used in rural areas, isolated communities, and hard-to-reach locations.
According to public data from the company, the expansion of the customer base and the offering of new contracting formats are part of the strategy to consolidate Starlink’s global presence.
Experts assess that rental can help popularize technology and accelerate the growth of the satellite internet market.
