With 333 meters in length, two nuclear reactors on board, and the capacity to operate up to 90 aircraft simultaneously, the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) is the tenth and last Nimitz-class supercarrier of the United States Navy.
Built by Northrop Grumman shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, between 2003 and 2009, the ship cost US$6.2 billion and was named in honor of the 41st American president — a former naval aviator who survived being shot down over the Pacific during World War II. Since its commissioning on January 10, 2009, the ship has operated from the port of Norfolk, Virginia.

Every element of the ship’s official seal was chosen with historical precision. The 41 white stars refer to Bush’s position as the 41st president.

The unexpected problem: the non-functioning toilets
Despite all its technological sophistication, the CVN-77 faced an embarrassing problem shortly after its delivery in May 2009: the sanitation system began to experience recurring failures.
Reports indicate that, by November 2011, the system had completely stopped working at least twice — rendering all 423 toilets distributed across the ship’s 130 bathrooms inoperable. In other incidents, half of the facilities or entire sections were out of order.
In one of the most serious incidents, a repair team worked 35 uninterrupted hours to restore the system. The identified cause was the improper disposal of materials in the toilets — such as feminine hygiene products, incompatible with the vacuum system. During a four-month dry-dock maintenance stop in 2012, anti-clogging measures were installed to correct the problem.
