Ultra Maritime, a company based in Massachusetts, presented a layered defense against torpedoes that combines advanced sensors, real-time analysis, automation, acoustic decoys, and direct neutralization in a single ecosystem aimed at protecting ships, crews, and missions against increasingly fast, silent, and intelligent underwater threats.

The proposal, called Layered Torpedo Defense, was announced by the Massachusetts-based company as a faster and more effective response to protect ships, crews, and missions against traditional and evolving underwater threats.

The company claims that the system accelerates decision-making with the support of advanced signal processing and automation. As a result, both soft neutralization responses and cutting-edge hard solutions can be activated quickly and accurately, shortening the neutralization chain and reducing the operator’s workload.

Faster, quieter, and smarter torpedoes

Ultra Maritime emphasized that current threats have become faster, quieter, and smarter than before. At the same time, unmanned systems have begun to represent a concrete threat, with the ability to operate with stealth, persistence, and coordination.

In this scenario, merely detecting or responding is no longer sufficient. The company argues that total coordination across the destruction chain is necessary, with agility to neutralize both conventional torpedoes and emerging unmanned systems.

The new solution was presented as a conceptual shift in defense against underwater threats. Instead of operating as a set of isolated systems, the proposal functions as a fully integrated and mission-ready capability, designed for modern conflicts.

The Ultra Maritime concept relies on a “system of systems” approach, bringing together multiple defensive technologies into a cohesive shield. Instead of depending on a single countermeasure, the model integrates detection, tracking, and neutralization resources into a single operational flow.

This architecture typically includes early detection means, such as towed sonars and advanced sensors. It may also incorporate disposable countermeasures that create acoustic decoys to confuse enemy torpedoes and enhance the vessel’s chances of survival in the face of an imminent threat.

In addition to soft neutralization techniques aimed at diverting or deceiving the threat, the system provides options for direct neutralization. These solutions are designed to physically neutralize the torpedo when necessary, offering a broader response within the same defense framework.
