With the Launch of the Wagoneer S, Jeep Joins the Electric SUV Race, Mainly Targeting Tesla Drivers
Jeep, known for its robust and off-road SUVs, is ready to challenge Tesla’s supremacy in the electric vehicle market with its first fully electric SUV, the Wagoneer S. Officially unveiled last week, the Wagoneer S promises to change the game, combining luxury and performance in a vehicle that marks a new chapter in the brand’s history, according to Electrek.
The First Fully Electric Jeep SUV
Although Jeep has already launched the Avenger electric in Europe, the Wagoneer S is its first global EV, signaling the brand’s ambition to conquer new markets and audiences. Antonio Filosa, CEO of Jeep, emphasized the launch’s importance, stating that it represents “a new chapter in the Jeep brand’s history.”

Mitsubishi confirms the triumphant return of a car beloved by Brazilians that was discontinued after almost 40 years, based on the Triton, 4×4, and targets rival Toyota Land Cruiser in a plan of 13 SUVs.
The Wagoneer S retains Jeep’s iconic design elements, but with modern updates for the electric era. The brand’s signature seven-slot grille has been redesigned with ambient lighting and is closed, eliminating the need for cooling a combustion engine.
Based on the STLA platform, the Wagoneer S promises a range of over 300 miles on a single charge. Equipped with a motor that generates 600 hp and 617 lb-ft of torque, this luxury SUV can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Despite sharing the platform with the Dodge Charger, the Wagoneer S has been adjusted to align with Jeep’s standards and expectations, including the Selec-Terrain system and four-wheel drive.
Luxurious and Connected Interior of the SUV
Inside the Wagoneer S, passengers will find an interior that combines luxury and technology. The SUV features a 12.3-inch central infotainment screen and an additional 10.25-inch screen for the passenger. With over 45 inches of usable space, Jeep promises a first-class user experience.
The Wagoneer S is expected to hit U.S. dealerships this fall, with a starting price of US$ 71,995. This launch is just the beginning of Jeep’s new electric era. Next, the brand will introduce the Recon, an electric SUV inspired by the Wrangler, focusing on attracting drivers seeking Jeep’s traditional off-road capability but with electric propulsion.
The Competition with Tesla
Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa believes that the Wagoneer S and Recon will primarily attract Tesla drivers. He commented that Jeep is targeting not only Tesla but also other brands in the electric SUV segment. This move is part of Filosa’s strategy to revitalize the brand, which has faced declining sales in recent years. In 2018, Jeep’s sales nearly reached 1 million units in the U.S., but dropped to 642,924 vehicles in 2023.
With the Wagoneer S, Jeep aims to compete directly with models like the Tesla Model Y and Model X. The Model Y, for example, offers a range of up to 320 miles and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, with prices starting at US$ 44,990 before the US$ 7,500 tax credit. Meanwhile, the Model X, with a range of up to 335 miles, starts at US$ 77,990.
