Discovery near Rena brings together over 3,150 silver coins dated between 980 and 1040 A.D., with pieces from England, Germany, Denmark, and Norway, while new excavations may still expand the size of the largest Viking hoard of its kind ever found in the country.

Over 3,150 silver coins linked to the Vikings have been found near Rena, in southeastern Norway, forming the largest Viking hoard of its kind ever discovered in the country. The pieces are dated between 980 and 1040 A.D., a period marked by attacks abroad and the return of plunder to Norway.

The discovery has been named the Mørstad Hoard, in reference to the farm where it was located. The find has been classified as unique by Norwegian authorities and remains under investigation, as new coins continue to appear during excavations.

Largest Viking Coin Hoard in Norway

The research team initially identified 19 pieces and began to consider that they could be part of a much larger collection. Continued excavations confirmed the scale of the find, which already exceeds 3,150 silver coins.

Archaeologist May-Tove Smiseth, from the Innlandet County Council, stated that the discovery represents a once-in-a-lifetime experience. She highlighted the professional and personal impact of witnessing the moment such an important collection came to light.

Pieces Came from Different Regions

The hoard draws attention not only for its quantity but also for the variety of origins of the coins. Many pieces came from abroad, especially from England and Germany, while others were associated with Denmark and Norway itself.

This diversity reinforces the complexity of the collection found in Mørstad. The coins belong to a historical period when Vikings carried out expeditions outside Norway and brought back goods obtained from these actions.

Excavations Continue in Rena

Excavations near Rena are still ongoing, and the total number of coins may increase. As new pieces continue to be found, the final count of the Mørstad Hoard remains unknown.

The site is being guarded by security agents to prevent theft and deter curious onlookers. The protection also aims to preserve the archaeological context, considered essential for the analysis of the largest Viking silver coin hoard ever discovered in Norway.
