Partnership with Google Brings Latest Artificial Intelligence and Android to the Brand’s Vehicles
Volvo announced that it will be the first automaker in the world to officially integrate Google Gemini, the company’s generative artificial intelligence, directly into its vehicles. The news was revealed during the Google I/O 2025 event in Mountain View, California, and represents a significant advancement in the driving experience, allowing drivers to interact with their cars in a much more natural and intelligent way.
Additionally, Volvo also confirmed that its vehicles will operate with Android 15, the latest version of the system, providing features previously available only on smartphones.
What Changes with the Arrival of Gemini in Volvo Cars?
With the integration of Gemini, Volvo vehicles will offer a much smoother, more natural, and efficient experience. The AI will allow drivers and passengers to execute complex tasks through voice commands, such as:
- Automatically translating messages;
- Finding destinations by directly searching in emails, messages, or the driver’s history;
- Getting help with everyday tasks, such as creating shopping lists or planning trips;
- Assisted navigation with personalized suggestions and contextual commands;
- Answering questions about the vehicle itself by accessing information from the car manual via AI.
The major differentiator of Gemini is eliminating the need for robotic commands, allowing for natural and continuous conversations, which, according to Volvo, helps to reduce the driver’s cognitive load, making driving safer and more enjoyable.
Android 15 in Cars: An Exclusive Advantage of Volvo
Currently, most cars on the market operate with outdated versions of Android, often lacking up to two generations behind smartphones. Volvo breaks this barrier and will be a pioneer by launching vehicles with the embedded Android 15, the same latest version used in Google Pixel phones.
The electric SUV Volvo EX90 has already been showcased running this version during Google I/O, and the promise is that production vehicles will receive the new system by the end of this year. While other automakers may take up to two years to access this update, Volvo customers will have immediate access to innovations.
A Partnership That Places Volvo Ahead in the Market
The relationship between Volvo and Google has lasted over a decade, but it has now been officially elevated to a new level. The Swedish automaker becomes an official partner in developing Android Automotive, which means that Google engineers will test updates directly in Volvo vehicles before releasing them to the rest of the industry.
Moreover, Volvo now serves as the hardware reference platform for Google, ensuring priority in receiving features such as:
- High-definition maps;
- Applications like YouTube directly on the dashboard;
- Voice-controlled climate systems;
- Early access to future generations of Android and Gemini AI.
When Is It Coming and for Which Models?
The implementation of Gemini and Android 15 begins in 2025, initially for models with the Google Built-In system, such as the electric Volvo EX90, EX30, EX40, and others from the current lineup. The expectation is that by 2026, the entire Volvo fleet equipped with Android Automotive will receive this update.
This positions Volvo as a leader in smart automotive technology, providing its customers with a much more advanced, safe, and connected driving experience.
