Rhea Bullos ran with her feet covered in tape, won three athletics events in the Philippines, and caught the world’s attention.
In December 2019, a school athletics competition in the province of Iloilo, Philippines, turned Rhea Bullos, then 11 years old, into one of the most talked-about names in youth sports. Without running shoes, the student competed with her feet wrapped in tape and a hand-drawn logo on the sides. The improvisation did not hinder the result. Rhea Bullos won the 400 meters, 800 meters, and 1,500 meters events, earning three gold medals in a single tournament and taking her story far beyond the regional school event.
Athletics competition in Iloilo revealed the story of Rhea Bullos
The images that circulated after the competition showed the care with which the young girl had protected her feet to run. The tape covered the sole, toes, and sides, in a simple attempt to create some protection for the events.
The scene caught attention because it contrasted with the final result. While many athletes rely on specific equipment to compete, Rhea Bullos reached the top of the podium in three different distances using an improvised and extremely precarious solution.

Team had only two pairs of shoes for 12 athletes
The lack of proper footwear was neither an aesthetic choice nor a symbolic gesture. According to Reuters, the team Rhea was part of brought 12 athletes to the competition but had only two pairs of running shoes available among them all.
Faced with this limitation, some students had to compete barefoot or improvise some protection for their feet. It was in this context that Rhea wrapped her feet with tape and drew the Nike symbol, creating the image that would end up going viral on social media.
Three gold medals amplified the impact of the story
The performance drew attention not only for the lack of structure but also for the level of the result. According to Reuters, coach Predirick Valenzuela stated that the athlete had started practicing athletics only about a month before the competition.
The coach himself highlighted that winning a race would already be difficult for such a young athlete at the beginning of her training. Even so, Rhea Bullos left the competition with three golds, reinforcing the perception that there was real sporting talent behind the scene that moved the public.

Valenzuela also stated that a proper pair of sneakers could make a significant difference in the runner’s development.
The observation gained traction precisely because the story directly exposed the impact of the lack of resources in school sports.
Photos went viral and mobilized support after the repercussion
After the images were published, the case quickly crossed the borders of the Philippines. The international repercussion turned Rhea Bullos into one of the most emblematic faces of the discussion about sports talent and inequality in access to basic equipment.
According to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, the viralization of the photos prompted offers and donations of footwear for Rhea and her teammates, including support associated with Nike itself. The repercussion also led the young athlete to receive new sports items after the tournament.
Rhea Bullos’ case exposed the reality of school athletics without structure
The story gained strength because it brought together two very difficult elements to ignore. On one side, there was a child without access to the minimum equipment to compete. On the other, there was an athlete capable of winning three events even in clearly unfavorable conditions.
More than a viral scene, the episode became a harsh portrait of the precariousness faced by many young people in grassroots sports.
At the same time, it showed how performance, discipline, and talent can emerge even when structure, sponsorship, and adequate material are lacking.
