Cobrazil, a company specialized in electromechanical services, gained significant recognition during the maintenance shutdown that took place at the TERNIUM steel mill in Brazil, in the city of Rio de Janeiro – RJ. The company’s operations occurred at Blast Furnace #2 and in the Steel Mill, with 160 workers active between June 15 and June 30.
Reducing the Risk of Contagion of the New Coronavirus During Maintenance Operations Was Challenging
Steel mill activities are naturally high-risk, further exacerbated by the new COVID-19. There was a need to adapt the team of workers to ensure that the work was carried out with the maximum possible safety to reduce the risk of contagion, considering that RJ is one of the states with the most confirmed cases. Guidance, identification, and proper use of PPEs were within Cobrazil’s scope to mitigate the situation.

In the Steel Mill area, the structural repair of the rolling beam interconnection was completed, where the existing interconnection was removed to install a new system consisting of 36 welded plates and 36 pins.
In the Blast Furnace #2 area, the replacement of 20m of refractory frames and the welding of 85m of plates and metal structures in the four pig iron channels were carried out. Notably, the internal assembly of scaffolding in the Downcomer between elevations 81m and 72m allowed for the repair of ducts and welding of approximately 3000 metal staples for the subsequent application of the refractory.
The shutdown was completed on time and with guarantees and reinforcement of safety for its employees. Cobrazil aims to meet the needs of its clients, providing specific technological solutions while always ensuring the safety of people and facilities.
