The Chilean multinational CMPC announced that it will invest about US$ 530 million in its factory in Guaíba, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, to modernize and expand its production capacity by an additional 350,000 tons. The project, named BioCMPC, will further qualify the operation of the unit, which has already been registering good performances, having surpassed the mark of 2 million tons of pulp and paper produced in 12 months, from May 2020 to April 2021.
In 2015, the company expanded its operations with a second pulp production line. The investment of R$ 5 billion increased the factory’s production capacity almost fourfold, from 450,000 tons of pulp per year to 1.75 million tons of pulp per year. The expansion created 10,000 direct jobs and 30,000 indirect jobs, in addition to generating a workforce training program, benefiting approximately 9,000 professionals. The construction of Guaíba 2 also stimulated local suppliers, with the hiring of about 180 companies from Rio Grande do Sul and the collection of taxes of approximately R$ 102 million in ICMS and R$ 2.2 billion in local purchases.
CMPC will install another monitoring station that will measure and present data on air quality in Guaíba, Rio Grande do Sul. The new equipment, to be installed on the south side, will complement the existing station on the north side of the factory and has a planned investment of R$ 2 million. It will be integrated with the official air monitoring network of Fepam, providing real-time information for the tracking and control processes already being conducted.
The implementation occurs voluntarily by the company, which planned to extend coverage to the entirety of the Guaíba air basin. This measure improves and expands the monitoring information of this important environmental parameter.
