EDP Receives Environmental License for Transmission Lines and Substation in Maranhão. There Will Be 127 Km of Lines Passing Through Six Municipalities in the State, Generating Approximately 500 Direct Jobs.

EDP, a company that operates across all segments of the Brazilian electricity sector, received the Installation License (LI) from the State Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources of Maranhão (SEMA) for the construction of 127 kilometers of transmission lines that will strengthen the state’s electrical system. The grant allows for immediate commencement of construction.

The implementation of the transmission project called Lot 7, which, in addition to two transmission lines, will also be responsible for a new power substation in the capital São Luís, was awarded in the Transmission Auction No. 5/2016 by ANEEL. In this case, the lines will be responsible for delivering electricity to the metropolitan area of São Luís.

The project aims primarily to increase the supply of electricity in northern Maranhão, passing through the municipalities of São Luís, Bacabeira, Santa Rita, Anajatuba, Itapecuru Mirim, and Miranda do Norte. With an investment of about R$ 400 million, the construction of the lot is expected to create approximately 500 direct jobs in the region.

Luiz Otávio Henriques, Vice President of Generation and Transmission at EDP in Brazil, stated that the company hopes to complete the work ahead of schedule, “which has already become a trademark in the market,” strengthening the infrastructure of the Maranhão electric grid and boosting the economy and job generation in the state.

In early this year, EDP received the Installation License from SEMA for the construction of 203 kilometers of transmission lines – called Lot 11, in the municipalities of Miranda do Norte, Matão do Norte, Cantanhede, Pirapemas, Vargem Grande, Chapadinha, and Coelho Neto. The project also included the expansion of the Miranda do Norte II and Coelho Neto substations, as well as the construction of the Chapadinha II substation. The work, which had a total investment of R$ 182 million, has generated approximately 200 direct jobs and is expected to be completed in the first half of 2020.

In total, the company has committed to invest about R$ 3.5 billion by 2022 in new energy transmission projects, which will add approximately 1,400 kilometers of networks to the national electricity system, in the states of Santa Catarina, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Espírito Santo, and Maranhão.

This week, the company obtained the Preliminary License (LP) for Lot 18, featuring 375 kilometers of transmission lines between São Paulo and Minas Gerais, expanding the receiving capacity of the entire Southeast region. The estimated investment by EDP for the construction of this project is R$ 1.3 billion.

In May of this year, the company acquired in the secondary market Litoral Sul Transmissora de Energia Ltda, holding the concession rights for Lot Q, awarded in the first stage of Auction 13/2015 in April 2016. The investment for the purchase of the transmission company was R$ 407 million, in a project consisting of two substations and 142 Km of transmission lines, connecting the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
