Belgorod Submarine, the “Submarine of the End of the World”, enhances Russia's military capabilities with advanced nuclear propulsion systems and strategic weaponry, including the Poseidon 2M39 torpedo.
The Belgorod, also known as Project 09852, is one of the largest nuclear submarines currently in operation, stretching an impressive 184 meters in length. Designed based on the Oscar II class, the submarine was significantly modified to perform duties beyond typical naval combat capabilities.
The Belgorod is especially notorious for being armed with the Poseidon 2M39 nuclear strategic torpedo. This torpedo is notable for its gigantic dimensions, measuring around 24 meters in length and 2 meters in diameter. The Poseidon is designed to evade missile defense systems due to its ability to operate independently of satellites.
Nuclear propulsion of Russia's Belgorod submarine
Equipped with two OК-650М-02 pressurized water nuclear reactors, the Belgorod can reach a top speed of 59 km/h submerged. It has the ability to operate submerged at depths of up to 520 meters, with a displacement of 24.000 tons when submerged, providing exceptional autonomy without the need for frequent refueling.
- Discover the largest, most dangerous and deepest ocean in the world: it covers almost a third of the Earth's surface, has winds of 110 km/h and its depth exceeds 11 thousand meters
- Shipbuilding gains momentum with the return of works at the Enseada Shipyard: 80 new barges, 1,2 jobs and a billion-dollar investment!
- SS United States to be sunk to become world's largest artificial reef
- New York dumps more than 2.500 subway cars into the ocean and the result is surprising!
In addition to nuclear torpedoes, the Belgorod is equipped to carry out secret warfare missions under the sea. It has advanced capabilities to host autonomous underwater vehicles, such as the AS-31 mini-submarine (nicknamed “Losharik”), which is designed for special operations at extreme depths. These mini-submarines can be used to intercept or cut underwater communications cables and collect information discreetly.
Contributions to nuclear deterrence
Belgorod's role in Russia's nuclear deterrence strategy is multifaceted. In addition to its capabilities as a nuclear weapons launcher, the submarine is a centerpiece in Russia's new generation of nuclear weapons. The inclusion of autonomous vehicles and the possibility of deep operations reinforce their usefulness in special operations contexts.
Why is the Belgorod considered the end of the world submarine?
The Belgorod submarine is nicknamed the “doomsday submarine” mainly due to its armament and the nature of its potential missions. This nickname arises from the unique characteristics and destructive capacity of the Poseidon 2M39 nuclear strategic torpedo, which the Belgorod is designed to carry.
Thanks to its nuclear reactors, the Belgorod can operate for long periods without needing to refuel, and its ability to operate at extreme depths allows it to avoid detection, thus increasing its effectiveness as a stealthy and strategic tool.
This is a terrifying submarine, certainly designed to destroy an entire fleet and also its home country. I wouldn't want to fight against a country that has it. Some Hollywood media seem much more “For Americans and converts to see” than a weapon of total destruction. The Russians and Chinese studied hard in preparation for a future total war while Uncle Sam slept the dogmatic sleep of the indestructible Nation.
