Pleated reinforced concrete structure transformed a simple residential staircase into a visual highlight of the house, with execution marked by precise formwork, steel-reinforced rebar, and eucalyptus shoring. The result drew attention for its clean finish and the combination of constructive technique and architectural impact.

Initially designed only to connect two floors, the staircase ended up gaining prominence within the residence due to its execution in reinforced concrete, its pleated design, and the precision in assembling the formwork, as reported by the Engenharia na Prática channel.

Responsible for the work, contractor Isaías led an execution that transformed a functional solution into an element of strong visual impact, bringing together eucalyptus shoring, steel reinforcement, and carefully aligned wooden forms to ensure a uniform finish.

Pleated Staircase Requires Planning and Structural Precision

Although the initial objective was merely to create safe access between the house’s floors, the chosen solution deviated from the traditional model and opted for a pleated staircase, a format where the steps appear to be part of a single structural block.

To achieve this continuous visual effect, execution depends on extremely precise markings, as the height, width, inclination, and fitting of each step need to be defined even before concreting begins.

Any misalignment at this stage can compromise the finish and lead to subsequent corrections, which is why the wooden formwork ceases to be merely a temporary structure and directly influences the aesthetic outcome of the staircase.

Aligned Formwork Influences Staircase Finish

In the final result, the formwork appears as one of the most important stages, because the wooden forms were prepared to create the cutouts of the pleated staircase with rigorous alignment between faces, steps, and support points.

Since concrete precisely reproduces the design of the forms, the assembly must remain firm throughout the execution, avoiding gaps, displacements, or deformations that could compromise both the aesthetics and the regularity of the surfaces.

In addition to defining the structure’s appearance, the formwork also helps control the volume of concrete poured, reducing risks of imperfections and contributing to a cleaner finish after the removal of the wood.

Eucalyptus Shoring Sustains Critical Stage of the Work

During concreting, eucalyptus log shoring supports the structure until the concrete reaches sufficient strength.

This stage is temporary but decisive for keeping the staircase stable while the material is not yet cured.

The set of supports, bracing, and wood may seem irregular at first glance.

Nevertheless, the function is technical: to prevent displacements, support the weight of fresh concrete, and preserve the planned design for the steps.

In works of this type, the shoring must remain firm throughout the initial curing process.

Premature or poorly planned removal can generate structural risks and impair the performance of the piece.

Steel Reinforcement Strengthens Concrete Staircase Resistance

The pleated staircase also depends on the internal steel reinforcement, which works together with the concrete to resist the structural forces.

Rebars distribute loads, reinforce points of greater stress, and help reduce the risk of cracks.

The bars need to be positioned at slab junctions, edges, and transition areas between steps.

This distribution allows the staircase to function as an integrated part of the construction, and not just as an element supported between floors.

Tying with annealed wire keeps the rebars in place before and during concrete pouring.

Hooks, bends, and anchorage points help connect the staircase to the rest of the house’s structure. Another important consideration is the concrete cover over the steel.

With adequate spacers, the reinforcement is protected against moisture and corrosion, increasing the durability of the assembly over time.

Intermediate landing improves internal circulation

The inclusion of an intermediate landing made access less tiring and more suitable for the available space.

This feature also helps organize circulation, especially in homes where the staircase occupies a frequently used passage area.

In addition to comfort, the landing contributes to the visual interpretation of the design.

It creates a pause in the journey and reinforces the feeling that the staircase was conceived as part of the environment, not just as a practical solution between floors.

The final finish highlighted defined corners, leveled surfaces, and visual continuity. As a result, the staircase took on the appearance of a single piece, a characteristic that often distinguishes pleated reinforced concrete structures.

Project transforms residential staircase into an architectural highlight

The project shows how a residential staircase can gain relevance when the work combines technique, planning, and careful execution.

The result depended on successive stages, from formwork to shoring, passing through reinforcement and concreting.

Even without altering the main function of the element, the pleated solution changed the presence of the staircase within the house.

Access between floors ceased to be just a passage and became a highlight in the environment.

The execution attributed to contractor Isaías and his team reinforces the role of skilled craftsmanship in concrete works.

In exposed structures or those with strong visual appeal, the precision of the workmanship directly impacts the final result.
