In Brazil and in several countries around the world, at the age of 18, young people reach legal adulthood, being able to perform functions such as obtaining a ID card, voting, and getting a driver’s license. However, the question that arises is: at what age do young people actually consider themselves “adults”? A study by Life Happens seeks to answer this question, revealing a new perspective on the transition to adulthood.

The New Definition of Being an Adult

According to the study Adulthood Across Generations, 71% of respondents stated that adulthood is more complicated today than it was 30 years ago.

The participants, totaling 2,000 people, were equally divided among four generations: Generation Z, Millennials, Generation X, and Baby Boomers, all residing in the United States.

What motivated this perception of difficulty? The increased cost of living and the social and economic changes that have impacted the way young people see themselves in relation to adulthood.

When asked how they define what it means to be “an adult,” responses frequently centered around finances. For 56% of respondents, being an adult means being able to cover their own bills, while 45% associated it with financial independence.

Additionally, 46% stated that they began to feel like adults when they left their parents’ home.

These data reflect a significant shift in young people’s expectations regarding financial responsibility and independent living.

Generation Z’s View of Career and Education

Generation Z brings a new perspective on the transition to adulthood. For them, this change does not happen automatically upon reaching legal adulthood.

Education and career play a fundamental role in this process. Many young people from this generation believe that academic training and professional development are essential to feel truly adult.

According to research, the Generation Z values higher education but also seeks more practical and direct learning options, such as technical courses and vocational training programs.

They are aware that the job market demands specific skills, and thus many choose to invest in courses that better prepare them for current demands.

Furthermore, this generation is characterized by a desire for autonomy and flexibility in their professional lives.

They seek not just a job but a career that provides personal satisfaction and growth.

Generation Z tends to prioritize companies that promote an inclusive work environment, with values aligned to their own, and that offer opportunities for personal and professional development.

This approach reflects a significant change in expectations regarding adulthood, where personal fulfillment and mental health are as important as financial stability.

The Impact of Social Media on the Perception of Adulthood

Another relevant factor to consider is the role of social media in shaping the identity of Generation Z.

Digital platforms not only influence how they communicate but also shape their perceptions of what it means to be an adult.

Exposure to different lifestyles and careers can create both inspiration and pressure, leading young people to constantly compare themselves to their peers.

Many adolescents and young adults feel pressured to achieve life milestones that are often showcased on social media, such as buying a house, obtaining a car, or establishing a successful career.

This pressure can generate anxiety and insecurity, as not everyone can keep up the same pace or achieve these goals at the same age.

The Importance of Support and Expectations

The transition to adulthood can be challenging, and Generation Z recognizes the need for support during this process.

Many young people expect their families and educational institutions to provide guidance and resources to help them navigate the challenges that come with independence.

The search for mentors and support networks is a growing trend, with many young people turning to online groups or communities that share similar interests and experiences.

Additionally, it is crucial for public policies to address the needs of this generation.

This includes investments in accessible education, mental health support programs, and initiatives that promote inclusion in the job market.

Creating an environment that fosters autonomy and personal fulfillment can help Generation Z feel more confident in their transition to adulthood.

The Need for Adaptation in Legislation and the Job Market

As Generation Z redefines what it means to be an adult, it is essential for companies and lawmakers to adapt to these new expectations.

Organizations should consider implementing flexible work policies, opportunities for continuous learning, and environments that prioritize employee well-being.

This not only attracts young talent but also contributes to employee retention and the creation of a positive organizational culture.

In summary, while legal adulthood is an important milestone, Generation Z redefines what it means to be an adult, emphasizing the importance of education, career, and emotional support.
