The same system that clears the sky also holds back the cold: the air mass accompanying the high has lowered the minimums and brought frost to the Gaucho and Catarinense mountains. On the coast, however, the wind blowing from the sea contradicts the rule and still leaves the weather overcast, with a chance of drizzle in the coming days.

A strong high-pressure center over the Atlantic Ocean will ensure the predominance of sun and stable weather in the South of Brazil between this Wednesday and Saturday. According to MetSul Meteorology, this system keeps the weather stable in most of the region, although moisture coming from the sea can still bring cloudiness and passing rain in the East of Santa Catarina and Paraná, especially in areas closer to the coast and the Serra.

The forecast was released on the morning of this Wednesday, June 3, 2026, by meteorologist Luiz Fernando Nachtigall, from MetSul. It is worth remembering that this is a weather forecast, subject to adjustments as meteorological systems evolve, and that it is ideal to always follow updates from official services. The condition was also confirmed by the Civil Defense of Santa Catarina, which indicates the predominance of stable weather in the state, with cloudiness and the possibility of light rain only on the coast.

What is the high-pressure center

To understand the forecast, it is useful to comprehend this atmospheric phenomenon.

In high-pressure areas, the air descends towards the surface, in a movement called subsidence, which makes it difficult for clouds to form and favors more stable, dry weather with greater sun presence, precisely the scenario expected for much of the South in this second half of the week.

The opposite happens in low-pressure areas, where the air rises from the surface to higher levels of the atmosphere, encouraging the formation of clouds, rain, and storms.

Therefore, as a general rule, high-pressure systems are associated with periods of stable weather, while low-pressure systems tend to bring instability and precipitation.

This mechanism explains the predominance of sun expected in the region for the coming days.

The detail that changes everything: the high is over the sea

There is, however, an important peculiarity in this configuration.

The high-pressure center is positioned over the Atlantic Ocean, east of Argentina and Uruguay, and currently records about 1030 hectopascals, potentially intensifying to 1035 hectopascals throughout the day, a value considered quite high, according to the meteorological models cited by MetSul.

As the high is over the sea, its circulation pushes humid winds from the ocean towards the continent.

When they encounter the Serra’s terrain, these winds can generate more cloudiness and passing rain in the East of Santa Catarina and Paraná, contrary to the idea that high pressure always means clear skies.

For example, some precipitation in coastal areas is not ruled out, although without significant volumes or risks, while the interior remains sunnier.

The cold that came along

The same system responsible for the stable weather also explains the drop in temperatures.

The high pressure accompanies a cold air mass that dropped the thermometers in Southern Brazil, especially in the gaúcha and catarinense highlands, where there was a record of light frost in the early hours of the day, on a morning marked by cold in much of the region.

Among the coldest points, São José dos Ausentes, in Rio Grande do Sul, recorded a low of 2°C, while Urupema, in Santa Catarina, marked 0°C this Wednesday.

According to meteorological services, Paraná and Santa Catarina are among the states most affected by the cold air this week, with Tuesday and Wednesday mornings tending to be the coldest, especially in higher altitude areas.

How the weather is in the Southeast

The high-pressure system also extends its influence beyond the South.

The same circulation pattern, with humidity coming from the sea interacting with the terrain, is expected to cause rain and drizzle this Wednesday and Thursday in areas near the coast in the East of São Paulo, in parts of Rio de Janeiro, in the Center, South, and East of Minas Gerais, and in Espírito Santo, making the weather more overcast in these regions.

The good news for those in the Southeast is that, by the end of the week, the trend is for stable weather to prevail there as well.

Just like in the South, the presence of high pressure tends to stabilize the atmosphere, reducing rains and increasing sunny periods as the days progress, in a pattern typical of this time of year, marked by the presence of drier and cooler air masses.

The strong high-pressure center over the Atlantic promises sunny and stable weather in the South and, by the weekend, also in the Southeast, while maintaining cold and frost in the highland areas and leaving the coast cloudier.

It is a good example of how a single meteorological system can produce such different scenarios, from the blue skies of the interior to the drizzle of the coast.

As every forecast is subject to change, it is worth keeping up with updates from meteorological services to plan the coming days more safely, whether for work, the field, or leisure.
