Company Drilling Campaign in Rio Grande do Norte Will Be Conducted by Drillship and Will Use the Port of Natal as Logistics Base
Wintershall Dea is awaiting environmental licensing to initiate a drilling campaign in block POT-M-857, in deep waters of the Potiguar Basin, in Rio Grande do Norte.
The block was fully acquired by the company for R$ 57.3 million during the 15th ANP bidding round held in 2018, and the drilling plan submitted to Ibama includes a dynamically positioned drillship to carry out the campaign.
The German Wintershall Dea also acquired two other projects in Rio Grande do Norte, POT-M-863 and POT-M-865, having paid R$ 24.5 million and R$ 16.3 million, respectively, in signature bonuses.
The oil company’s planning also includes using the Port of Natal as a logistical support base for its operations for this campaign.

The “dock ship” that purposely sinks to swallow superyachts like toys: Yacht Servant is 214 meters long, 46 meters wide, has a 6,380 m² deck, and uses float-on/float-off operation to transform maritime luxury into a semi-submersible parking lot.
In 2018, in the 15th ANP bidding round, Wintershall Dea defeated the consortium formed by Petrobras, Shell, and Petrogal to acquire the concession for POT-M-857, and to acquire blocks POT-M-863 and POT-M-865 it outbid a consortium formed by Petrobras and Shell.
The newly appointed Managing Director of Wintershall Dea’s business unit in Brazil, Valerie Bosse, will lead the company’s first exploratory campaign in Brazil.
It is the company’s interest to have a diverse portfolio in Brazil, thus it has stakes in seven exploratory blocks located in the basins of Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, and the Campos and Santos basins.
About the Company
In September 2018, the merger between Wintershall and DEA Deutsche Erdöl AG was agreed upon, establishing Wintershall Dea as the largest independent oil and gas producer in Europe.
The merger of the two companies indicates important parameters for its economic growth in the future. Last year, the annual production of Wintershall and DEA amounted to 215 million barrels of oil equivalent to a daily production of 590,000 boe. Between 2021 and 2023, Wintershall Dea’s daily production is expected to increase to 750,000 to 800,000 boe, corresponding to an annual growth of 6% to 8% in production.
