WhatsApp has announced that it will stop supporting certain iPhone models starting in May 2025. Here's which devices will be affected and how to prepare.

Starting in May 2025, WhatsApp will end support for older versions of iOS, directly impacting users of iPhone models that are not compatible with the latest operating system updates.

WhatsApp will stop working on devices using versions older than iOS 15.1. Second Wabetainfo, this change will mainly affect users with iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, whose latest available updates are iOS 12.5.7.

However, users with newer iPhone models will be able to continue using the app as long as they are running a compatible version of iOS.

Why is WhatsApp making this decision?

WhatsApp has always strived to be accessible to a wide range of devices and iOS versions. This has allowed the app to cater to a wide audience, ensuring that most users can take advantage of the features it offers.

The decision to maintain backwards compatibility was based on the desire to reach as many people as possible.

However, as WhatsApp seeks to update itself with new technological trends and improve the experience of its users, the platform needs to abandon older versions of iOS.

Newer operating systems include technologies and APIs that allow for new features and improvements that simply aren't possible with older versions of iOS.

The impact of change

This change will affect users with iPhones older models, such as the iPhone 5s, 6, and 6 Plus. These models, released over a decade ago, were last updated to the iOS 12.5.7.

Since these devices cannot be updated to newer versions, users of these models will need to find alternatives to continue using the WhatsApp.

For users with newer iPhones, the change won't be a problem as long as they update their devices to iOS 15.1 or top. The update process is simple: just go to Settings > General > Software Update and follow the instructions.

Benefits of abandoning old versions

By discontinuing support for older versions, WhatsApp will be able to optimize the app for newer versions of iOS, providing significant performance improvements and new features. Many of these features rely on APIs that were only introduced in newer versions of iOS.

Additionally, the change will allow WhatsApp to ditch old and unnecessary code, which could result in a faster and more efficient app for most users.

It is important to note that this change will not affect Android users, who will be able to continue using WhatsApp normally, regardless of the operating system version.

Preparing for change

WhatsApp is giving affected users five months' notice, allowing them to prepare for the change.

For those on incompatible devices, the recommendation is to try to upgrade to a newer model that is compatible with the latest versions of iOS. For those who cannot upgrade, the only alternative will be to switch to another device.

While the change may be inconvenient for a smaller portion of users, it reflects the natural advancement of technology. WhatsApp needs to adapt to new market demands and offer an optimized experience for its users.

For affected users, the key will be to act quickly and ensure their devices are up to date to continue enjoying all the features of the app.

This song is fantastic, I remember hearing it when I was a kid and here I am: I'm obsessed. This song is an anthem for me.
