A lighthouse in the middle of the desert draws attention near Hinkley, California, for being planted in the Mojave more than 160 kilometers from the nearest coast. Inaugurated in July 2017, the tower was not born to guide ships, but to transform the arid landscape into a work of art.
According to wikipedia, the construction is 15 meters tall and has a luminous range of 10 nautical miles, about 19 kilometers. Even so, no boat could see it. The most likely observation point is on State Highway 58, almost 8 kilometers away.
A lighthouse in the middle of the desert far from the sea
The idea came from artist Daniel Hawkins, who began planning the project in 2010. The following year, he purchased the hill where the lighthouse would be installed. The inauguration took place on July 1, 2017, after a long phase of feasibility.

The physical work progressed quickly. The construction took three months, but the financial and administrative preparation took years. Hawkins reported that securing resources to erect the lighthouse took 10 years.
Extreme heat and bureaucracy delayed the project
The desert also posed practical obstacles. When the work began, the temperature exceeded 43ºC, or 110ºF. The heat forced the work to be halted for a few weeks before construction could continue safely and steadily.
The bureaucracy was even more challenging. The artist described the process as an odyssey through paperwork, planning meetings, public hearings, inspections, successive permits, and fees. All this before the project was considered for official evaluation by the county’s regulatory bodies.
Among the hurdles was the location. The lighthouse is near a military testing field and an area associated with toxic waste storage, which made approval more complex.
Structure weighs 3.6 tons
Built on a concrete base, the lighthouse has a steel structure and an exterior made of semi-translucent polycarbonate panels, with an opalescent appearance. The tower weighs 3.6 tons.
The installation also had its unexpected episode. During transport, the tower apparently fell off the truck that was taking it to the site.
Even without a maritime function, the lighthouse in the middle of the desert fulfills a symbolic purpose: guiding people through the vastness of the Mojave.
Instead of pointing out the route for ships, it has become a visual and artistic landmark in a place where no one would expect to find such a construction. The scene mixes isolation, light, and presence in the void.
