Resident of ‘Baiana Switzerland’ Improvise Equipment to Wash Dishes with Hot Water During Intense Cold, but Engineers and Utility Company Warn that Makeshift Adaptations Can Overload Networks, Cause Shorts, and Trigger Domestic Accidents.

A video recorded in Vitória da Conquista, in the southwestern Bahia, went viral showing a resident installing an electric shower in place of the kitchen faucet to have hot water during the harsh winter. The city, which recorded 13.7 °C this Friday (18) according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), is among the coldest in the state and has earned the nickname “Baiana Switzerland.”

In the footage shared by the TV Band Bahia profile in partnership with the Resenha VCA page, the man explains that he adapted the shower by buying a new heating element for R$ 8 and connecting improvised cables and tubes. “Now to wash the dishes I have completely hot water. Thank you, God. MacGyver came to me,” he said humorously while showing the setup.

On social media, reactions were mixed. Some users praised the creativity in the face of the cold, while others warned about the risk of explosions and short circuits. “MacGyver is going to blow up the block with this electric bomb,” commented one user, reflecting concerns about the precariousness of the installation.

Experts Reinforce Warnings About Shocks and Fires

According to Rosy Menezes, Health and Safety Manager at Neoenergia Coelba, makeshift installations can overload wiring and cause serious accidents. “The improper installation in the video can cause electric shock and overload in the household electrical system. You should never adapt an electric shower as a faucet,” she explained.

The expert also emphasizes that showers need to be connected to protected circuits, including circuit breakers and RCDs, to avoid shorts and fires. “When a makeshift setup cannot handle the electrical load, there is a real risk of fire,” she added. In the market, there are certified electric faucets that offer safe heating, avoiding risks to the network and residents.

In another recent article published by the CPG (Click Oil and Gas) portal, experts had already warned about the dangers of fatal shocks related to old showers and makeshift installations, reinforcing the importance of following technical standards and regular maintenance to avoid tragedies.

Intense Cold Motivates Risky Improvisations

Vitória da Conquista, with expected temperatures between 14 °C and 27 °C this Sunday (20), is facing one of the coldest winters in recent years. Residents are resorting to makeshift solutions to mitigate the impact of the cold, but the warnings from engineers and utility companies indicate that certified alternatives installed correctly are safer.

This information was originally disclosed by Correio 24horas, based on data from Inmet and interviews with experts in the electrical sector, reinforcing the warning about unsafe practices in residences.
