USA and China compete for Brazil over resources that could be worth trillions — rare earths put the country at the center of a global dispute
-
With 74% of companies facing difficulties in hiring, technicians and engineers in renewable energy are becoming scarce in Brazil and are essential to support the expansion of solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects.
-
After China, it’s now the turn of the USA to ‘secure’ a share of Brazil’s natural resources: the country buys critical rare earths for R$ 3 billion and enters the center of the global technology dispute.
-
Rare earths are in everything, from cell phones to bullet trains, and what almost no one realizes is why they have become the target of such a delicate global war.
Thus, Bamin intends to carry out a series of new constructions at the Pedra de Ferro mine, aiming to meet the goal by the end of the projected period. Among them is the production of section 1 of the West-East Integration Railroad — Fiol and the Porto Sul, in Ilhéus, which has total projected investments of around R$ 3.3 billion.
Cesar Inostroza, CEO of Mining and Metallurgy at SNC-Lavalin, commented on the services the company will provide for the works and stated that the integrated approach from the mine to the port is present at all levels of the mining industry, including greenfield and brownfield. The executive also highlighted that SNC-Lavalin will work to deliver all proposed projects to Bamin safely and expertly over the coming years.

The Pedra de Ferro Project involves the integration of iron ore mining operations in the state of Bahia, carrying out the extraction and processing of two abundant resources in the region, hematite and itabirite, as well as transporting for marketing via rail and maritime routes.
Thus, among the competencies of SNC Lavalin in the construction plan for Bamin at the Bahia mine, the main activities will include: an open-pit mine, a hematite processing plant, an itabirite processing plant, a product storage yard, a loading station, and a rail loop that will provide access to the East-West Integration Railroad (FIOL).
Maria de Lourdes Bahia, Vice President of Mining and Metallurgy at SNC Lavalin in Brazil, commented on the construction plan and emphasized: “This project is extremely important for the Brazilian economy, helping to generate thousands of jobs and positioning Bahia to become the third largest iron ore producing state in Brazil. Our commitment to innovation, technology, and sustainability allows us to provide the best solutions with lasting benefits to our clients and the communities in which we work and live.”
Now, Bamin will continue its heavy investments in the pursuit of expanding production at the Pedra de Ferro mine and will follow its growth plan in the Brazilian mining market over the coming years.
